Outdoor sights in Finland

  1. Lemmenjoki National Park

The largest national park in Finland, Lemmenjoki offers some of the most exciting trekking in Lapland. You'll see desolate wilderness, rivers, arctic landscape and the Ravadasköngäs waterfall. You may even bump into a lonely gold panner in the middle of nowhere.

The steep slopes of the Lemmenjoki River are a terrific vantage point from which to see the Ravadasköngäs waterfall; you can also walk to it from a nearby hut (there are several free wilderness huts in the park to stay in).

  2. Halkokari

Beyond Neristan, the Suntti stream continues down to the harbour. There is a beach here, Halkokari, where a British attack was repelled during the Crimean war. One of the gunboats was captured, and can be seen in the 'English Park' on the river just north of Neristan. The event is commemorated in the town's festival in early June, when people dress-up 1854-style, and there's a theatrical re-enactment.

    Tallipiha Stable Yards

In the attractive Näsinpuisto park, Tallipiha Stable Yards is a restored collection of 19th-century stable yards and staff cottages that now house artists and craftworkers making handicrafts, chocolates, ceramics and shoes. Traditional Midsummer and Christmas celebrations are held here and you can ride in a horse-drawn carriage or recharge your batteries at the Russian-style Café Vatruska.
