    Sjalvstyrelsegården

    It may seen like a local council building, but Sjalvstyrelsegården is actually the home of the Åland parliament. The free guided tours (available in English) explain the autonomous nature of Åland and the election of the Lantråd, the premier of Åland, and end with a slide show about the area.

  2. Town Hall

    Restored 19th-century wooden buildings grace the eight radial streets of Hamina's octagonal town plan. From its centre - Hamina has a more literal centre than most towns, dominated by the 18th-century Town Hall - most sights are a short walk away.

    In its heyday as a key port, travellers entering the town had to pay customs duty, collected at the Old Customs House, a smallish rust-wood building dating from 1720, just along from the imposing town hall.
