Seglis
On Vaskiluoto, and part of the local sailing club, this is a stylish but surprisingly reasonably priced restaurant. It has a terrace overlooking the marina and features dishes such as whitefish fillet in lobster sauce, and chicken in cola sauce. There's plenty of value in the steaks, and there's also a decent lunch buffet and plenty of children's choices.

Café Lasipalatsi
The warm interior is popular year-round with lunching city suits, while the terrace throngs during after-work drinks. The ravintola (restaurant) upstairs is plusher, but stick to the lower deck for the best value, including the popular lunch special that runs to pasta and soups with great breads.

Timbaali
Slow food doesn’t get any slower than snails and they’re best slurped up on a sunny day in the courtyard of this Porvoo legend. Try the escargots with duck-liver butter for a real treat, though they do nongastropod dishes including a reindeer pizza or wild boar fillet.

ÅSS Paviljong
Don't worry about the acronym: this boat-owners' favourite is the oldest restaurant in town, and also one of the most atmospheric. It's in a lovely old wooden building on the water's edge. The speciality is seafood and the set lunch buffet is good value.

Svarte Rudolf
The best of the floating restaurants moored on the south side of the Aurajoki, this place does Italian with a leaning towards seafood. While long summer evenings invite top-deck drinking, the downstairs dining room is an elegant alternative.

Ravintola Lokkilinna
This well-positioned yet secluded spot overlooks the dunes, making for an excellent summer terrace for a beer or filling lunch buffet. A new development promises to make this area busier so enjoy it before it gets too crowded.

Teatteriravintola Tillikka
This place, wedged between the river and the Tampere Theatre, serves a fine buffet-style lunch. In the evenings it steps up a gear, serving a creatively prepared range of steaks and fish and also happily catering to children.

Ravintola Karpalo
This is an unpretentious place behind the supermarket. It serves burgers, pizzas, kebabs and steaks and has a lunch buffet. It doubles as a local nightspot with karaoke and dancing nightly.

Murginapirtti
Up a dirt road away from the town centre, this old-style Finnish farmhouse restaurant does a hearty lunch buffet on weekdays. It’s rustically Karelian right down to the icon in the corner.
