Getting there & away
Finnair flies daily from Helsinki to Kuusamo airport, which is 7km northeast of the town centre. Buses meet incoming flights (€3 to Kuusamo, €5 to Ruka) during the ski season. Local taxis can be called on 852 2290.
Buses run daily from Kajaani (€34.70, four hours), Oulu (€30.10, three hours) and Rovaniemi (€25.40, three hours). There are frequent services to the ski centre at Ruka (€5, 30 minutes). In summer (early June to mid-August) an excursion bus travels between the Karhuntassu tourist office in Kuusamo and the Oulanka Visitor Centre (€9.30, 1½ hours), stopping at the Kuusamo bus terminal, Tropiikki spa centre, Ruka and Juuma village. It departs at 8.45am from Monday to Friday, and 1.50pm Saturday. At the Juuma road junction (Käylä) you can change buses to get to Ristikallio, Hautajärvi visitor centre and Salla.
