Getting there & away
Finnair has two to four daily flights from Helsinki to Kajaani. The airport is 8km northwest of town; take bus 4 (€2.50).
Kajaani is the major travel hub in the Kainuu district. There are frequent departures for Kuhmo (€15.20, 1½ hours) and other towns in the region during the week, but few departures on weekends. The local bus service is useful if you want to visit Paltaniemi (same bus as to the airport).
Kajaani is on the main Helsinki to Oulu line. There are four daily trains from Helsinki (€67, seven hours), via Kouvola and Kuopio.
