Getting there & away
Buses run regularly to Joensuu (€18.60, two to three hours), Kajaani (€18.60, two hours), and Lieksa (€8.70, 50 minutes). For Kuhmo, change at Sotkamo.
Regional trains from Joensuu (€16, two hours) via Lieksa, stop in Nurmes.
Saimaa Ferries (481 244; www.saimaaferries.fi; Kirkkokatu 16) operate on Lake Pielinen in summer. As well as cruises, the MS Vinkeri II travels to and from Joensuu (via Koli) weekly, departing from Nurmes at 8.30am on Sunday (to Joensuu €50, 10½ hours, to Koli €20, 3¾ hours).
