Getting there & away
Land
Bus
All buses along the eastern route, between Helsinki and Joensuu, stop in Lappeenranta. Bus and train tickets can be booked at the central office of Matkahuolto (0200 4000; 9am-5pm Mon-Fri), opposite the church park on Valtakatu, where many intercity buses stop. Regular services include: Helsinki (€32.30, four hours), Savonlinna (€22.90, three to four hours via Parikkala), Mikkeli (€16.20, 2½ hours) and Imatra (€6.20, 45 minutes). For Kuopio change at Mikkeli.
There are local connections to smaller places in South Karelia, although some buses only run once a day, on weekdays.
Train
Seven to eight trains a day between Helsinki and Joensuu will take you to Lappeenranta. There are frequent direct trains to/from Helsinki (€34.90, 2¾ hours), and to Savonlinna (€21.50, 2½ hours, change at Parikkala, sometimes to a railbus).
Air
There are daily flights between Helsinki and Lappeenranta on Finnair (0203-140 140). Bus 4 travels the 2.5km between the city centre and the airport.
