Land

Bus

The busy bus terminal, just north of the train station, serves the entire southern half of Finland, with regular departures to all major towns and villages in the vicinity. Express services to/from Kuopio include: Helsinki (€49, five to seven hours), Joensuu (€23.20, 2½ hours), Kajaani (€25.60, 2¾ hours), Jyväskylä (€23.20, 2¼ hours) and Savonlinna (€25.60, three to four hours).

Train

Five trains a day run to Kuopio from Helsinki (€47, 4½ to five hours). Kouvola, Pieksämäki, Iisalmi and Kajaani also have direct trains to/from Kuopio.

Boat

Ferries and cruise boats depart from the passenger harbour, about 1km east of the kauppatori. In summer, the lake ferry MS Puijo departs for Savonlinna on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 9am (€75, 10½ hours), going via Heinävesi and Oravi. It returns from Savonlinna on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
