If you want to know more about Karelian history or culture, the Carelicum, which reopened in January 2011 after a long refurbishment, should be your first stop. It’s a conceptual museum, with themed displays – on the region’s prehistory, its war-torn past, the Karelian evacuation, the importance of the sauna etc – that cover both sides of the present-day border. Temporary exhibitions (Karelian pop music and cartoons at the time of research) are interesting, but in Finnish only.
