Olutravintola Sillansuu
Savonlinna’s best pub by a long shot is compact and cosy, offering an excellent variety of international bottled beers, a decent whisky selection and friendly service. There’s a downstairs area with a pool table and during the festival amateur arias are sometimes sung as the beer kegs empty.

Panimoravintola Herman
A brewery pub-restaurant with river frontage that would be a star attraction were it not for Koulu. Its stained glass and large dockside terrace makes for an excellent watering hole, and the food is worth visiting for, especially the lunch buffet.

Kemin Panimo
This is one of the liveliest pubs in town, brews its own beer, and also has a good range of international nectars. The large terrace doesn't have the greatest of views; it looks over the supermarket carpark, but in Kemi you can't be too picky!

Green Apple
Downstairs from Old Park, Green Apple is a recently opened pub which locals have taken to their hearts. It has a terrace, and hospital-bright lights, as well as a nightclub, Golden Apple, with a popular dancefloor.

Teerenpeli
A good pub with home-brewed beer and cider, this has a relaxing, candlelit interior and heaps of choice at the taps. They do some good fruit-flavoured brews and also have a terrace and a cavernous club downstairs.

Opus K
You can wet your whistle at Opus K, which is one of Finland’s best pubs, lined floor to ceiling with books and always with a new discovery from an obscure Finnish microbrewery.

Molly Malone's
Helsinki's rocking Irish pub is packed most nights - there's a live band upstairs, cosy snugs downstairs, and this is a great place to meet travellers, expats and Finns out for a good time.

Kallio
For the cheapest beer in Helsinki (from around €2 a pint during the seemingly perpetual happy hours), try a pub crawl in the working-class suburb of Kallio.

This popular pub has a good outdoor terrace in the centre of town. Attached is the fairly tacky disco/nightclub, Livinstone.
