Irish Times
A convivial Irish bar with a distinctly Finnish flavour, this is a fine choice for an animated night of pubbing. It has an excellent heated terrace at the back, and regular live music and karaoke, while the downstairs bar has pool tables. There’s a snug, friendly feel about the whole set-up. There’s a cover charge at weekends, when it’s at its best.

O’Connell’s
Popular with both Finns and expats, this rambling Irish pub is handy for the train station and has plenty of time-worn, comfortable seating and an air of bonhomie. Its best feature is the range of interesting beers on tap and carefully selected bottled imports. They also do hearty pub meals.

Fall’s Café
Set among craft shops in a converted brick factory, this bar has a decent range of beers and ciders as well as perhaps Tampere’s cutest terrace, a wedge-shaped balcony right by the water where you can watch crazy little fish jumping vertically in the evening light.

Pub Bastun
This down-to-earth place near the maritime museum has a small terrace and a grassy bank to lie back on with a beer. It has loud live music most weekends in summer; some surprisingly well-known Swedish and Finnish rock groups have played here.

Henry’s Pub
One of Lakeland’s best rock venues, this atmospheric place has bands playing several times a week, including big Finnish and international names, but it’s a good spot for a drink even if there’s nothing on.

Club Marin
One of the best waterside options, this upmarket harbour pavilion is ideal for a beer or wine as the sun sets, or a meal. It’s evening dancing for an older crowd, who enjoy the live bands.
