Getting around
There are four local bus routes running around two circular routes. A and C serve the northern parts of town, while B and D serve the south. They run half-hourly in winter and hourly in summer and are free.
For bicycles, Ro-No Rent (12820; www.goaland.net/rono; 10-11am & 4-5pm May, 10am-6pm Jun-end Aug) is the main rental firm and it has outlets at Mariehamn's Österhamn and Västerhamn. There are daily/weekly rates for standard bicycles (€7/35), three-speed models (€9/45) and mountain bikes (€13/65), as well as tandem bikes (€17/85) and motor scooters (€45/135). When its office isn't open, arrangements can be made by phone.
Hiring a car is a good way to see Åland. The best place is friendly Biluthyrning Åland (525 505) at the Esso petrol station opposite the Sjökvarteret. Rates for a small car start at €63 for a day, but there's often a 24-hour special for €55. There's a minimum of fuss involved, and they'll deliver it for free within Mariehamn.
