Introducing Kings Road

Carving a scenic route between Suva and Lautoka, the Kings Road is every bit as spectacular as the faster and more popular Queens Road route. Much fuss is made of the pothole-ridden roads, the ageing buses and the general lack of infrastructure in northern Viti Levu, but for those who don’t mind a few bumps – and that’s all you’ll get – a lush interior and gorgeous views over the Wainibuka River awaits, with the occasional village meandering its way along the road and river.

The road coils and extends for around 256km, linking the country’s two largest cities via the mainland’s least developed coast. Promises to upgrade the road have been in the pipeline for many years and work has been carried out at an excruciatingly slow rate. However, by the time of this latest research, only a 20km section of road west of Korovou remained unsealed and earthmovers were in evidence. A Sunbeam Transport express bus takes around six hours to trundle between Suva and Lautoka, although most travellers layover at Rakiraki or Nananu-i-Ra.
