Introducing Vaileka, Rakiraki & Ellington Wharf

Heading northwest from Korovou is a stunning journey: the mountain road winds along Wainibuka River, past small villages and Viti Levu Bay and down to Rakiraki. Against the skyline, the imposing Nakauvadra Range is believed to be the home of the great snake-god Degei, creator of all the islands.

Inland from Rakiraki, about 2km off Kings Rd past the sugar mill, the township of Vaileka has a bus station, taxi stands, banks, a market, supermarket and a few cafés (one with Internet access).

The turn-off to Ellington Wharf is 5km east of Rakiraki; the wharf is a further 1.5km. A Patterson Brothers ferry travels to Nabouwalu in southwest Vanua Levu from here twice a week.

Heading out of Rakiraki towards Nadi, look out for Udreudre's Tomb, the resting place of Fiji's most notorious cannibal whose personal tally reached at least 872 corpses. It's about 100m west of the Vaileka turn-off, on the left.
