    O'Reillys

O'Reillys kicks the evening off in relatively subdued fashion - relaxed punters playing pool or watching sport on the numerous TVs. But it brews quite a party as the hours tick by and come 11ish the place is generally throbbing with a gleeful crowd of locals and travellers. There's no distinct age code, and backpackers, foreign contractors, locals and expats fill the dance floor, shaking their bits to Europop, soft metal, techno, peppy country and western…basically anything that keeps the crowd moving.

Forget warm pints of Guinness; the only Irish quality about O'Reillys (aside from the name) is that it's enough fun to knock your socks off.

    Savusavu Yacht Club

It has a friendly pub feel about it, although it gets a bit rough around the edges on a Saturday night. With picnic tables by the waterside, the Yacht Club is a good place for a drink and to meet local expats. There's cold beer on tap and bar snacks (around F$6) and meals can be ordered from the next-door Captain's Café. Happy hour is 17:30 to 18:30. Tourists are considered temporary members.

    Ed's Bar

Nadi's best watering hole draws local and visiting social animals and keeps them happy with cheap beer and friendly staff. There's a small dining section inside but the bar is the main event, where stool seating, pool tables and live bands dominate. Tables outside catch the breeze but they generally fill by late afternoon so you'll have to strap your beer boots on earlyish to nab one.

    Planters' Club

This was traditionally a place for planters to come and drink when they brought in the copra, and some of their descendants can still be found clustered around the bar today. You can taste the history in the air as you taste the beer in your glass. Happy hour is 17:30 to 18:30. Once a month, the club holds a Sunday lunch lovo. The bar staff will sign in a tourist.

    Waitui Marina

There are classic South Pacific views from the balcony bar here: palm trees, yachts, an island beach and ethereal hot springs. The décor is suitably nautical, and merry yachties might find it hard to tell if they're at sea or on land. The club is friendly and comfortable, the bar is well stocked, and you are a temporary member if you are a foreigner on holiday.

    Traps Bar

Something of a subterranean saloon bar, Traps is one of Suva's best drinking holes. Take a seat in the pub-like pool room with wide-screen TV (yes with sports) or join the happy din at the main bar, which also features a vibrant dance floor. The crowd is generally young and trendy, but not pretentious. Live music is frequent as are Bob Marley sing-alongs.

    Purple Haze Nightclub

Inflatable aliens, neon planets and a wall mural suggesting 'Purple Haze is the best nightclub in the universe' fit in quite nicely at this eccentric club. Fijian and Hindi pop and R'n'B pump out of the speakers at intergalactic decibels; it's gay-friendly.

  8. Daily Planet

Surrounded by barbed wire fortifications, the Daily Planet looks as if it has been built to defend itself from attack, or to keep everyone inside. It's probably best not to stay until closing time, when fights occasionally roll down the main street.

  9. Royal Suva Yacht Club Bar

The Royal Suva Yacht Club Bar is a popular watering hole for yachties and locals and has great views of the Bay of Islands and the mountains, including Joske's Thumb. Even without a yacht, overseas visitors are welcome and can be signed in.

    Bounty Bar & Restaurant

A favourite with those in the know, the Bounty hosts a solid drinking phase somewhere between dinner and the live music. Things get loud, beery and fun as the night draws on. You're sure to meet your new best mate here.

    Birdland R&B Club

This underground bar looks like a jazz and blues den and the smoky air certainly adds the appropriate bouquet but the live music is mostly in the form of rock, played loudly on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights.

    Barn

It's a rugged, country-and-western bar with live music nightly except Sunday and Monday. Music is country with a bit of pop and reggae thrown in for good measure. The cowboy crowd is a little older.

    Mahi Bar

Drink prices at the bar at the Hot Springs Hotel are a little steeper than in the clubs. Fijians seem to get around that by bringing their own kava. Still, the views are great.

    Rave Bar

A nightclub at the Fiji Mocambo has live bands, karaoke and rave music. There is a cover charge and a dress code (no flip-flops or shorts) and the crowd is unsurprisingly touristy.

    Savusavu Wines & Spirits

It's a popular, absurdly well-stocked bottle shop in the Copra Shed Marina. The place to come for imported wines and beers.
