Culture Shock Ratings

The culture shock rating considers the level of development in the location, the area's infrastructure and how easy it is to access services. It also takes into consideration how different the food and customs are and whether English is widely spoken. While generalisations are always tricky, here’s a summary of the ratings:

Rating 1

This is the least confronting of Intrepid's product range. English is the native language and the food, customs and access to services will be familiar to you.

Rating 2

You will probably have experienced food like this in restaurants back home and English is commonly spoken. Services are available most of the time but there may be some cultural differences.

Rating 3

Expect some culture shock. You will be exposed to signs of poverty and access to services may be sporadic. The food will be quite different to home and English speakers harder to find. Respecting the local culture will make it easier to fit in and really experience the location.

Rating 4

The comforts of home are more of a rarity. English is not common and the food will be quite different to what you are used to. It is important to observe some of the local customs to not cause offence. Many of the locals' standard of living may be confronting.

Rating 5

You're really out there! You'll need to pay specific attention to health and hygiene. A large proportion of locals' living conditions are a world away from standards you are used to. You may have difficulty finding an English speaker and there is little or no access to services. Paying heed to local customs is essential.

Itinerary

Days 1-2 Berlin

Kick off the journey in Berlin, one of the most happening cities in Germany and home to a vibrant nightlife, edgy arts scene and festivals galore. For a historic perspective, inspect Checkpoint Charlie, pedal through the streets on a cycling tour or see remaining fragments of the Great Wall. Get comfortable on an overnight train to Poland.

Days 3-4 Krakow

Arrive in Krakow and head down to Rynek Glowny for a spot of people-watching or seek out some solace in St Mary's Church. In free time, maybe pay a visit to Wawel Castle - a superb testament to the country's royal past. Or, for a sombre interlude, take a day trip to Auschwitz to uncover tragic tales from WWII.

Days 5-6 Prague

Head west to the capital of the Czech Republic, Prague. Explore the narrow hallways of the mysterious Prague Castle, visit the resting place of Franz Kafka's in the Jewish Quarter or strike up a conversation with locals at an underground absinthe bar.

Day 7 Cesky Krumlov

Enjoy the cultural environs of Cesky Krumlov, a bohemian town nestled in a bend of the Vltava River. Wander through a confusion of cobbled alleys by day and enjoy the friendly array of restaurants and bars by night.

Days 8-9 Vienna

Travel to Vienna and discover a city with a vibrant artistic soul. Art lovers will relish the abundance of quality museums while for history buffs, the fascinating story of the Habsburg family can be revealed on a visit to two of Austria's most stunning palaces, Hofburg and Schonbrunn. Perhaps enjoy the dulcet tones of operatic performers at a night time theatre show.

Days 10-11 Budapest

Discover how Budapest has experienced something of a renaissance Since the Iron Curtain was lifted. Maybe hire a bike and explore the grand boulevards, climb Gellert Hill for spectacular views of the Danube, sample rich Hungarian food or freak out at the House of Terror.

Days 12-13 Bled

Flex the muscles in one of the most popular lakeside cities in Slovenia. Go rafting, cycle to Vintgar Gorge or paddle out to Bled's island church to ring its bell and make a wish.

Days 14-15 Venice

Be romanced by the Bridge of Sighs and the Basilica di San Marco in this city of hidden treasures. In free time, peruse the Guggenheim Museum or perhaps enjoy the quintessential Venice experience â“ a gondola ride through narrow waterways.
