    Al Presidente

Al Presidente is a discreet, greenery-shrouded place, under the walls of the presidential palace and which also has outdoor seating in summer. Its sophisticated air is matched by the seafood- centred menu. Innovative dishes include baccalà whisked into polenta and grilled, and trippa di coda di rospo (tripe of angler-fish tail), but it also does a lipsmacking pasta all’amatriciana.

    Balıkçı Sabahattin

The limos outside Balıkçı Sabahattın pay testament to its enduring popularity with the city's establishment, who join cashed-up tourists in enjoying its limited menu of meze and fish. The food here is excellent, though the service is often harried. You'll dine in a wooden Ottoman house or under a leafy canopy in the garden.

This is another one of those pile-it-on-high Budapest pubs where you’ll leave feeling you’ll never eat again.

    Cargo-Bar

A nice halfway house between cool and alternative, located in a tucked-away spot on the river. There are lots of art installations, live gigs, video shows and DJs.

    Kiosco de las Flores

Still revelling in the transformation from 70-year-old shack to a glam conservatory (just check the photos), this eatery doles out great pescaíto frito (fried fish).

    Brasserie de la Roue d’Or

If you’re hankering for hearty Belgian fare (rabbit, pigs’ trotters and the like), follow the locals’ lead and head to the ‘Golden Wheel’, where the décor is inspired by the city’s surrealists.

    Punjab Tandoori

Good-value Indian and Pakistani food is easy to find anywhere around the Grønland T-bane station. This place has simply presented Indian fare – curry, dahl, samosas and tasty curries.

    Bakken Met Passie

Say your sweetie hates ethnic food but you desperately want something exotic on the Albert Cuypstraat. This quietly fancy shop bakes the appropriate bribes like yummy Valrhona chocolate tart or lemon cake.

    Restaurang Waldorf

Inside the Vasacity shopping centre, this is a busy place, especially at lunchtime. It has a bizarre menu featuring almost every known cuisine, from Italian to Chinese, and including Japanese and Swedish dishes.

  19. Madame Hortense

The most atmospheric and elegant restaurant in town is on the top floor of the three-level Zorbas complex enjoying great views of the harbour. Cuisine is Greek Mediterranean, and they do steaks (around €12)

    Jamie’s Italian

Celebrity chef Jamie Oliver’s restaurant serves up some excellent rustic Italian dishes at affordable prices, with the antipasti served on their trademark wooden planks. Decor is modern – all graffitied walls and exposed brick – dishes such as linguini with clams and wild mushroom panzerotti are great and the service efficient.

    Marquis de Salade

This basement restaurant is a strange hybrid of a place, with dishes from Russia and Azerbaijan as well as Hungary. There are lots of quality vegetarian choices, too. And, by the way, it’s not just about salade.

    Entresol

It has funky design, hip music and snail-slow service. It doubles as a bookshop/library and contemporary art gallery. But the main reason to come (besides free wi-fi) is the vegetarian-friendly European food and (pricier) fresh juices.

    Restaurante Zé Neto

This marvellous family-run place specialises in homemade Portuguese standards, including cabrito (kid). Come in the late morning and you'll catch the elderly owner – a fixture here since 1952 – tapping out the menu on a typewriter of similar vintage

    Alpine Coffee Shop

Grab a bite at this excellent, friendly little café, which serves toasted sandwiches and snacks. Unusually, it also boasts a huge tea menu with 25 varieties, including the ‘world's rarest tea' at £8.50 per pot. Unfortunately, after all that tea, there's no toilet – use the public loo in the nearby car park.

    Anfiteatro Romano

The Anfiteatro Romano is Cagliari’s most impressive Roman monument. Although much of the original 2nd-century theatre was cannibalised for building material, enough has survived to pique the imagination. In summer, the amphitheatre recovers something of its vocation by hosting summer concerts.

    La Mama

Mama knows what she's doing. This converted villa, with a sprawling covered deck that's filled to all hours, dates from the late 19th century, and deserves its many fans, thanks to the very tasty, meat-heavy options. Sheep pastrami with polenta is a winner, but the roasted pork neck with country-style potatoes is unbeatable.

    Belediye hamamı

Past the Çeşme Kervansaray Hotel on Bağlar Çarşı Caddesi is Çeşme's restored 18th-century Belediye hamamı. With its dome and marble interior, it's an attractive place. Bathing is mixed (though peştemals - hamam clothtowels - are used). Opening hours are sporadic at other times of the year.

    Pan Asia

Manga films, light projections and long communal tables account for the hipster quotient at this high-energy restaurant next to the Hackesche Höfe. The menu predictably hopscotches from Thailand to China, via Japan and Vietnam, and back. Fresh ingredients and healthy, low-fat cooking techniques make it a favourite with waist-watchers.
