Production sights in Europe

    Amber Processing Gallery

A key stop on Lithuania's Baltic Amber Road is an old barn that has been renovated and given a lick of yellow paint to become a workshop where raw amber is crafted.

In the 17th century there were a dozen or so such workshops, which today's Amber Processing Gallery, run by the Palanga guild of amber masters, emulates. In the late 1880s Palanga was one of the largest amber-processing centres in the Baltics, its amber products being transported to southern Russia then mailed on to the Caucasus, Germany and France. A gallery sells finished amber pieces (jewellery, sculptures, chessboards etc), as does upmarket amber jeweller Valentina ir partneriai.

'Cotton to culture' is the motto of the Alte Spinnerei, a 19th-century cotton-spinning factory turned artist colony. Around 80 New Leipzig School artists, including Neo Rauch, have their studios in this huge pile of red-brick buildings, alongside designers, architects, goldsmiths and other creative types whose creations are displayed in 10 galleries. De Gooyer Windmill

This 18th-century grain mill is the sole survivor of five windmills that once stood in this part of town. It moved to its current spot in 1814, when the nearby Oranje-Nassau barracks were built and blocked the wind. The mill was fully renovated in 1925 and is now a private home. Alongside, the public baths were converted into the Brouwerij ’tIJ in 1985. A maker of slurpable organic beers, the brewery offers a free tour at 4pm on Fridays.

    House Mill

The only remaining one of a trio of mills that once stood on this small island in the River Lea, the House Mill (1776) operated as a sluice tidal mill, grinding grain for a nearby distillery, until 1940. Tours, which run according to demand and last about 45 minutes, take visitors to all four floors of the mill and offer a fascinating look at traditional East End industry. There’s a small cafe and shop on site.

The former Zollverein coal mine is a beautiful Bauhaus-style behemoth that was recognised as a Unesco World Heritage Site in 2001. In operation until 1986, it's since been rebooted as a cultural hub with museums, performance spaces, artist studios, a fine restaurant and some unusual playgrounds.

    Frantoio Ipogeo

Worth seeing is the Frantoio Ipogeo, only one of some 35 olive presses buried in the tufa rock below the town. It's here that they pressed Gallipoli's olive oil, which was then stored in one of the 2000 cisterns carved out beneath the old town.
