Cable Car sights in Europe

  1. A

    Teleférico

One of the world’s most horizontal cable cars (it never hangs more than 40m above the ground), the Teleférico putters out from the slopes of La Rosaleda (the rose garden of Parque del Oeste). The 2.5km journey takes you into the depths of the Casa de Campo, Madrid’s enormous green (in summer more a dry olive hue) open space to the west of the city centre. Try to time it so you can settle in for a cool lunch or evening tipple on one of the terrazas along Paseo del Pintor Rosales.

  2. Cable Car

Now reopened after 19 years, Dubrovnik’s cable car whisks you from just north of the city walls up to Mt Srđ in under four minutes. At the end of the line there’s a stupendous perspective of the city from a lofty 405m, down to the terracotta-tiled rooftops of the old town and the island of Lokrum, with the Adriatic and distant Elafiti Islands filling the horizon. Telescopes help you pick out details far, far below. There’s a snack bar and a restaurant and the Museum of the Homeland War (currently under renovation) is close by.

  3. Krossobanen Cable Car

The Krossobanen Cable Car was constructed in 1928 by Norsk Hydro to provide its employees with access to the sun. Long since renovated, it whisks tourists up to Gvepseborg (886m) for a view over the deep, dark recesses. The best panoramas are from the viewing platform atop the cable-car station. It also operates as the trailhead for a host of hiking and cycling trails\.

  4. Tegelbergbahn

For fabulous views of the Alps and the Forggensee, take this cable car to the top of the Tegelberg (1730m), a prime launch point for hang-gliders and parasailers. From here it’s a wonderful hike down to the castles (two to three hours; follow the signs to Königsschlösser). To get to the valley station, take RVO bus 73 or 78 from Füssen Bahnhof.

  7. Pfänder Cable Car

A cable car whizzes to the 1064m peak of the Pfänder, a wooded mountain rearing above Bregenz and affording a breathtaking panorama of the Bodensee and the snowcapped summits of the not-so-distant Alps. At the top, a 30-minute circular trail brings you close to deer, ibex and whistling marmots at the year-round Wildpark (nature reserve). There’s also a Greifvogelflugschau, where feathered performers amaze with aerial feats.
