    Sokeri-Jussin Kievari

An Oulu classic, this timbered local on Pikisaari was once a sugar warehouse and has outdoor tables that have good views of the centre. Although the renovated interior has lost a bit of the original character, it’s still an attractive spot to eat, with no-frills traditional dishes, including reindeer.

  2. B

    Dom na Arkitekta

Dom na Arkitekta ‘The Architect’s House’ is a fine old wooden National Revival–style building with a private, leafy courtyard popular with local cats. The usual grills, steaks and salads are on the menu and it’s a restful place for a cold beer or two.

  3. C

    Hereford Steakhouse

This modern 1st-floor steakhouse grills up top-class steaks (of beef, lamb, turkey, veal and whale), priced by weight and cut. You can pick from fillets, T-bones, rib eyes and entrecôtes, and watch as they’re cooked at the grilling station in the centre of the dining room. There’s a good red-wine list.

  4. Kingfisher

Set in a beautifully restored grain store, the Kingfisher serves up a short but sound menu of modern Irish food with international twists. Go for Thai spiced pork with sticky rice and sweet Asian salad, duck confit or spiced Cajun chicken with sour cream. It's all extremely good.

    Masala Zone

This spacious place with outside seating set back from Upper St is one of the best budget Indian options in London. Thoroughly modern in design, it serves up meals centred on its famous thalis, as well as tandoor and grilled dishes. There are now several other branches throughout the capital.

  8. Café Under Uret

This bistro’s dim, candlelit interior is filled with wheat sheaves, comfy leather banquettes and easy-on-the-ear pop, while outside tables catch the evening sun. Well cooked, healthily huge brunches, sandwiches and burgers feature at lunch, while evening mains include chicken breast, beef and pasta.

  9. G

    Bulvar Tavuk Döner

This central hole-in-the-wall would be a mere blip on busy İstasyon Caddesi, were it not for its well-executed chicken sandwiches and melt-in-your-mouth gözleme (savory pancakes). If the weather permits, grab one and walk down the street to the 100 Yıl Kültür Parkı.

This fabulously frilly tearoom occupies one of Bath's oldest houses, and makes the perfect venue for classic cream tea (served in proper bone china), accompanied by finger sandwiches, dainty cakes and the trademark Sally Lunn's Bun.

    Nanà Vini e Cucina

An appealing and simple trattoria, specialising in Neopolitan flavours. Eat in the high-ceilinged interior, under huge brass pipes, overlooking the open kitchen, or outside on the piazzetta. Try la carne tenenera scaloppina Nanà, cooked simply in white wine, and other southern dishes.

  14. K

    Muğam Club

A wonderfully atmospheric two-storey caravanserai offers alcove and courtyard dining options accompanied by impressive cabaret shows demonstrating tasters of various Azeri musical and dance styles. The Azeri food is excellent, but prices can be exorbitant (kebabs AZN12!). Often closed for private functions.

    De Keuken Van 1870

You’d never guess that this smart-looking place was once a restaurant for the poor. It still keeps up that heritage, though, with decent cooking (think stamppot or couscous) at exceedingly decent prices. The service can be a bit surly – just consider it part of the cultural experience.

  16. M

    Luini

Stockbrokers and student radicals, models and their harried hairdressers might get together here and sing Kumbaya, if they didn't all have their mouths full. Panzerotti is Milanese for yummy at this popular purveyor of pizza-dough pastries stuffed with cheeses, spinach, tomato, pesto and prosciutto.

  17. N

    Gino

Hidden away down a narrow lane close to parliament, Gino’s is perennially packed with gossiping politicians. Join the right honourables for well-executed staples such as rigotoni alla gricia (pasta with cured pig’s cheek) and meatballs, served under hanging garlic and gaudily painted vines. No credit cards.

    U Babci Maliny

U Babci Maliny ul Sławkowska (012 422 7601; ul Sławkowska 17) ‘At Granny Raspberry’s’ is a godsend for travellers on a budget, with hearty Polish staples at giveaway prices served in an overwrought boudoir-like basement eatery. Love the boas and the chandelier.

  19. P

    Vienna

Hidden in a quiet residential street, with an overgrown garden screening its outdoor terrace, this German-Austrian restaurant is renowned Hamburg-wide for its authentic schnitzels, venison and fish. It doesn't take reservations; your best bet for getting a table is to turn up early, at 6.45pm, or late, at 9pm.

  20. Q

    Dal Corsaro

A classic of Cagliari's fine-dining scene, Dal Corsaro attracts the glad-rag scenesters who want to be seen. Stiff white tablecloths, silver wine buckets and elegant couples murmuring over floral arrangements set the scene for some outrageously good food, while white-smocked waiters provide impeccable service.

    Centotre

A palatial Georgian banking hall enlivened with fuchsia-pink banners and aubergine booths is home to this lively, child-friendly Italian bar and restaurant, where the emphasis is on fresh, authentic ingredients (produce imported weekly from Milan, homemade bread and pasta), and uncomplicated enjoyment of food.

  23. John David’s Bar

Slow service, dirty glasses, poor food, rude staff, expensive…thankfully, this sign is just cracking English humour. If you’re missing Blighty, this beachfront cafe is the go-to place for tasty cooked breakfasts, daily papers and a natter with John, who also runs the watersports centre next door.

    Govindas

Govindas serves savoury Indian-style vegetarian food in a pleasant setting with mellow music. Hare Krishna devotees cook up a nine-dish thali meal of basmati rice, soup, salad and a few hot dishes such as eggplant casserole for bargain prices, meaning that the place is very popular with students and travellers.

  25. T

    Tampopo

Fast and furiously efficient, you're in and out of this Asian fusion canteen-style restaurant before you can learn the difference between the various gorengs (noodles or rice). The food is uniformly excellent and well worth the 30-second wait. There are vegan, vego and allergy-sensitive meals available.

  26. U

    Vanaema Juures

Vanaema Juures (Grandma's Place) was one of Tallinn's most stylish restaurants in the 1930s and still ranks as a top choice for Estonian fare. The antique-set dining room is slightly formal and the menu, whilst specialising in authentic dishes such as pigs' trotters, has plenty of options (even for vegetarians).

  27. V

    Tre Spiedini Da Bes

A classic osteria where you can crowd in for no-nonsense food. Choose from several broths and pasta for the first course and then dig into, say, a slab of sole for the main. It's a typically cramped Venetian locale, with ponderous timber ceiling beams and all sorts of paraphernalia hanging on the walls.
