Vegetarian restaurants in Europe

A
Entresol
It has funky design, hip music and snail-slow service. It doubles as a bookshop/library and contemporary art gallery. But the main reason to come (besides free wi-fi) is the vegetarian-friendly European food and (pricier) fresh juices.

Bosanska Kuća
Bosanska Kuća 'Come eat,' says the waiter in national costume, inviting you into a restaurant promoting Bosnian tradition in food and setting. This snappy joint makes choosing easier with its colour-picture menu - maybe a kebab, some grilled fish, or stuffed peppers or aubergines for vegetarians.

Caffellatte
With a bas-relief marble cow adorning its counter, this quirky, turn-of-the-20th-century milk shop has, since the 1980s, pioneered vegetarian and organic cooking, from its veggies and dairy products to the namesake caffè latte. The soups are thick and bursting with flavour, and the scones with fresh cream are worthy of a Cotswald teashop.

La Biotika
The macrobiotic, café-style La Biotika, out the back of a health-food shop, takes its vegetarianism seriously with an emphasis on simplicity and healthy eating with not too many creative twists: seitan (wheat meat), tofu-based dishes and generous salads. If you’re a vegetarian, you’ll love it. If you’re not, you might want to go elsewhere as the variety is limited.

Cafe Paradiso
A contender for best eatery in town, this down-to-earth vegetarian restaurant serves a superb range of dishes, including vegan fare: how about sweet chilli-glazed panfried tofu with asian greens in a coconut and lemongrass broth, soba noodles and a gingered aduki bean wonton; or spring cabbage dolma of roast squash, caramelised onion & hazelnut with cardamom yoghurt, harissa sauce, broad beans and saffron-crushed potatoes? Reservations are essential.

Fellini's
Fear not, veggies: you might be in the land of the Cumberland sausage and the tattie hotpot, but that doesn't mean you can't indulge. Fellini's turns out fancy 'vegeterranean' food - squash-and-cabbage hotpot, leek-and-brie filo parcels - that would tempt even the hardiest of carnivores. It's run by Zeff's owners; a small upstairs screen shows arthouse and opera performances.

Hitchcock's Vegetarian Restaurant
The word 'quirky' could have been invented to describe this place – an atmospheric maze of small rooms, and an all-you-can-eat vegetarian buffet whose theme – Thai, Indian, Spanish, whatever – is chosen by the first person to book that evening. But hey – the food is excellent and the welcome is warm. Bookings necessary.

Marie Colline
This familial little bistro has such a traditional feel that it comes as something of a surprise that its menu (a handful of daily choices) is entirely meat- and fish-free. Solo diners are seated at a sociable communal table.

Green's Vegetarian Café
One of Yorkshire's best vegetarian restaurants, Green's adopts a gourmet attitude towards veggie and vegan cuisine, serving dishes such as Sicilian caponata (aubergines, red pepper, celery, olives and capers) with spaghetti, and Thai green curry with chickpeas, squash and tofu. Best book a table to avoid disappointment, especially for dinner.

Whale Tail Cafe
This gorgeous 1st-floor veggie restaurant has an elegant dining room and a more informal plant-filled yard for lunch on a sunny day. The spicy bean burger (£6.50) is particularly good. Food here is locally produced and, when possible, organic.

Éden
Now in a new location in an early-19th-century townhouse just below Castle Hill, this self-service place offers stodgy but healthy vegetarian platters and ragouts (no fat, preservatives, MSG, white sugar etc). Seating is in the main dining room on the ground floor or, in warmer months, in the atrium courtyard.
