Vegan restaurants in Europe

  1. A

    Mono

Combining vegetarian food with music, Mono is one of Glasgow's best vegan eateries. Monorail is in the same premises, which means you can browse through an indie record shop while waiting for your food to be prepared. The all-day bar-menu provides classics such as the breakfast fry-up while the main menu has a touch of flair demonstrating a Mediterranean influence. The lasagne is well worth ploughing through. Mono also makes a relaxing place for a coffee or a beer.

    Grænn Kostur

Tucked away in a small shopping arcade off Skólavörðustígur, this friendly little cafe serves great-tasting vegie set meals, with a daily-changing menu. There are also lighter snacks such as pizza, pies and salads. The high round tables and bar stools aren’t particularly relaxing, but it’s worth sitting up straight for good food.

    Zerwirk

Through a twist of fate the Zerwirk, once a purveyor of wild game, now houses one of Munich's few vegan restaurants. Dishes like pasta carbonara, tofu fennel or rucola chilli are served in elegant minimalist surrounds in the 2nd-floor dining rooms. Downstairs, the vaulted chambers are thrown open every weekend for club nights.

    Hans Wurst

The name is a bit of a tease, for you definitely won't find any wurst (sausage) in this stylish vegan cafe. In fact, Michael Ristock is a veritable genius when it comes to coaxing maximum flavour out of organic, fair-trade and animal-free ingredients. Perks: great music, relaxed crowd and pizza too.

    Eighth Day

New and most definitely improved after a major cleanup, this environment-friendly hang out is a favourite with students and sells everything to make you feel good about your place in the world, from Fairtrade teas to homeopathic remedies. The vegetarian- and vegan-friendly menu is substantial.

    Złoty Osioł

A cheerful, popular vegetarian café of the kind you’d expect in health-conscious Western Europe, the ‘Golden Donkey’ has hippy décor (think psychedelic walls and distressed furniture) and meat-free dishes, including some vegan dishes.

    Café Kino

Run by all-vegan owners, this co-operative café is impressive - the food's organic and local, the coffee's ethical, and there's even an alternative to corporate coke. Veggie lasagnes, leek and bacon pie and portabella mushrooms characterise the menu.

    Wai Kika Moo Kau

Say its daft name fast and you'll get a clue to the ethos of this primarily veggie-vegan café. It spills onto the pedestrian street outside so you can sip your soyachino or tuck into meat-free specials as the shoppers pass by.

This strictly vegan eatery is egg-free and serves a fair few mock-meat dishes such as poulet végétal aux champignons (‘chicken’ with mushrooms) and escalope de seitan (wheat gluten ‘escalope’). No alcohol.
