    Happy Bar & Grill

Varna’s home-grown, and now nationwide, chain restaurant has four branches around the city, including at this central location. The uncomplicated menu of grills, steaks and salads pulls in customers throughout the day, and the friendly waitstaff, who occasionally launch into spontaneous dance routines, certainly add to the atmosphere. There’s another branch on bul Slivnitsa.

  3. C

    Hereford Steakhouse

This modern 1st-floor steakhouse grills up top-class steaks (of beef, lamb, turkey, veal and whale), priced by weight and cut. You can pick from fillets, T-bones, rib eyes and entrecôtes, and watch as they’re cooked at the grilling station in the centre of the dining room. There’s a good red-wine list.

  4. D

    Restaurant du Cours

You'll be hard-pressed to find a cheaper place for a sit-down meal in the centre of Sartène. Long on character and short on frills, this welcoming eatery set in a pokey vaulted room whips up pizzas, salads, meat dishes, lasagne and seven varieties of tagliatelle.

    Pri Monahinite

[ourpick] Pri Monahinite Set in the courtyard of a little church, Pri Monahinite (‘At the Nuns’ Place’) is a classy place for roast lamb, grilled pork and other meaty offerings. It also does good salads and has an extensive wine list.

  6. F

    Biffhuset

On two floors, wood-panelled and low-beamed, the Beef House is a seriously meaty place, strictly for ardent carnivores. Just tick/check your menu card, indicating size, cut and accompanying sauce, hand it to the server and sit back.

  7. G

    Grelhador de Alfama

Follow your nostrils to this no-fuss grill house. Exposed stone and fado paraphernalia create a cosy-meets-kitsch setting for barbecued fish or steak. The pocket-sized terrace fills up fast in summer.

    La Brasserie de l’Entrecôte

Served high and mighty on a gut-busting plate, entrecôte steak with herby sauce is the only thing on the menu at this high-ceilinged, Parisian-style brasserie. It’s more than enough.

    Stek Chałupa

Good for grilled sausages and steaks in all their guises.

  10. J

    Bizzie Lizzie's Bistro

A warmly lit basement with country-kitchen pine furniture and green-and-white check tablecloths, decorated with bric-a-brac and old street signs, Bizzie's has a half-vegetarian, half-carnivore menu - whichever you are, go for the delicious nut roast with chilli and tomato sauce.

    El Gaucho

A romantic Argentinean-style steakhouse tucked away in a valley in Bubeneč, this restaurant is part of the Hotel Villa Schwaiger, and the setting is reminiscent of a country inn. There are plenty of pasta and chicken dishes on the menu, but the focus here is on the beef. Order by the cut at prices about 100 Kč cheaper than similar steakhouses in the centre. Dine in the garden in nice weather. It’s hard to find, so bring a map or take a taxi, or combine a visit with a walk through nearby Stromovka park.

    Korovabar

In case you could not tell from the Holstein décor, korova means ‘cow’. And this so-called cow-bar milks this theme for all its worth. Cow hides hang from the ceilings and adorn the booths. Yet somehow, it works: the place is way more hip than it is hokey. The sophisticated menu features an excellent selection of steaks, among other things, and an incredible wine list. And if all that black and white has you longing for greener pastures, take a seat on the pleasant porch.

    Gergely’s

The flagship of the four eateries around Schlossplatz (don’t miss the garden, replete with a tractor and lovely trees and seating), Gergely’s is inside a 14th-century vaulted cellar and focuses exclusively on steaks made from quality beef sourced locally and internationally. Top of the range is a 500g T-bone from US-bred Hereford (€30), but there’s almost a steak with a provenance and size for everyone, which you can enjoy with a strong selection of sauces and accompaniments.

    Cowboys

There's a fine line between chic and kitsch, but this upmarket steakhouse manages to walk it, even in clunky boots and slightly tacky staff outfits. Its Dolce and Gabbana-style cowhide seats and adult-orientated rock soundtrack is offset by soft lighting, exposed brick and a simple but deftly executed menu. There are succulent steaks and tasty fish, plus pasta and Portobello mushroom burger for nonmeat eaters. The outdoor terrace, 70 steps up, overlooks Prague's rooftops.

    Shanahan's on the Green

'American- style steakhouse' hardly does justice to this elegant restaurant where JR Ewing and his cronies would happily have done business. Spread across three floors of a stunning Georgian building are four elegant dining areas, where impeccable service and a courteous bonhomie attract the great, the good and the not-so-good to its well-laid-out tables. Although the menu features seafood, this place is all about meat, notably the best cuts of impossibly juicy and tender Irish Angus beef you'll find anywhere on the island. The mountainous onion rings are the perfect accompaniment, while the sommeliers are among the best in the business.

    Unico

This very trendy, very orange Argentine parillada (steakhouse) has taken over an old butcher and put a modern (well, sort of 1970s, but it works) spin on it. Unico is all about meat – especially the barbecued entrecôte (rib steak) with chunky frites (chips); look at the ‘map’ of a steer provided and choose your ‘territory’. Good wine selection.

    Da Martino

Get that new suit taken out if you must, but do not miss the Florentine steak at Da Martino. The three-inch-thick hunk of grass-fed beast arrives at your table with the bone still in, then carved with all due ceremony. Devour it with a side of roasted rosemary potatoes, but leave room for surprisingly avant-garde panna cotta with almonds and sour cherries.

  19. ZenZero

Set on the roof terrace of an old palazzo that overlooks a peaceful square off the main road, ZenZero is the young people's eating place of choice in Catania. It's a welcome change from the world of pasta, serving international dishes like tempura or Argentine steak. It's also a good place for an aperitivo, and the flower-laden terrace is divine.

Marco Pierre White Steakhouse & Grill

Bad boy chef Marco Pierre White (he who once made Gordon Ramsay cry) lent his name and designed the menu at this casual but upmarket steakhouse, where cuts of beef (and hunks of fish) are the fare, presented with a minimum of fuss but with plenty of taste.

  21. S

    Metropolitan

Attached to the Hotel Saski, the Metropolitan is a snazzy fusion restaurant with a distressed Mediterranean look to it. It has nostalgic B&W photos of international locales plastering the walls and is a great place for breakfast. It also serves pasta, grills and steaks, and more ambitious things like honey and orange roasted duck leg.

    Taverna degli Amici

Expandable waist bands are going to be all the rage next season, if the eating habits of the fashion designers thronging the Amici are any indication. Prada, Etro, and Costume National converge here for lunch, and only naïve students from the nearby Design Institute choose the wan salad bar over the great grilled meats.

  24. U

    Efir-100

Adjoining Djoana, and serving similar grilled meat specialities, this busy place (pronounced efir-sto in Bulgarian) has an eclectic, jungle-like décor. Entrées range from common standbys such as shopska salad and chicken shishle to more unknown commodities like ‘dinosaur’s tail on fire’.

  25. V

    Braceria Escosazio

This place is a carnivore's heaven - a butcher's counter filled with every barbecued meat possible and an enormous grill. The specialities are bolpette (meatballs), gnummeriddu (liver wrapped in goat's intestines) and sausages. Make your selection at the counter and watch them grill it for you.

    Grill 15/16

The summer courtyard garden at this busy restaurant provides an attractive atmosphere for enjoying the grilled meat, steaks and fish served here. Dishes include fresh trout roasted over volcanic lava rocks, venison and T-bone steaks and salads. There's also a small children's menu and good vegetarian options.

    Goodman Steakhouse

Inside the Novinsky Passage shopping centre, this classic American steakhouse is done up in leather and wood, with B&W photos on the walls and old movies running on the big screen. It receives rave reviews for filet mignon and rack of lamb. Also claims Moscow's best burger for the bargain price of Rbl360.
