Tarihi Sultanahmet Köftecisi Selim Usta
This is one of the most famous eateries in the city, and to be frank, we’re at a total loss to understand why. The ever-present queues of locals obviously adore its rubbery ızgara köfte (grilled meatballs) served with bread, white beans, salad and pickled chillies, but we have always been underwhelmed. Why not try it yourself, though? The place has been serving since 1920 and is certainly clean, cheap and cheerful.

Fast Good
When Ferran Adrià, the star Catalan chef, became concerned about Spaniards’ growing obsession with fast food, he decided to do something about it. Fast Good is a wonderfully simple concept (food that’s fast but healthy) and it’s a terrific place to get a freshly prepared hamburger using Spanish ground beef with olive tapenade, roast chicken, sandwiches with Spanish ham, paninis, or French fries cooked in fresh olive oil. We also love the curvy white and lime-green décor. There’s another Fast Good in Salamanca.

Obikà
This sleek place resembles a sushi joint, but with mozzarella rather than fish. The name means ‘here it is’ in Neapolitan dialect, and the white stuff arrives fresh daily at 8am. Try the burrata (mozzarella-like cheese filled with cream). There’s a good brunch. Ancient-meets-modern décor mixes columns and an underlit floor. Aperitivo (7pm to 9pm) costs €8.

There are preset recipes if your imagination fails you. Drinks include reasonably priced wine and beer.
