Wärdshuset Ulla Winbladh
Named after one of Carl Michael Bellman’s lovers, this villa was built as a steam bakery for the Stockholm World’s Fair (1897) and now serves fine food in intimate rooms and a blissful garden setting. Sup on skilful dishes like lake Hjälmaren pikeperch fried with mustard, creamy barley and crayfish, or opt for simple Scandi favourites (Skr110 to Skr145), including herring with Kvibille cheese and homemade crispbread. Roxette fans – ask the staff to point out singer Marie Fredriksson’s artwork. Book a week ahead in summer.

Nordic Bakery
As simple and stylish as you'd expect from the Scandinavians, this small cafe has bare wooden walls and uncomplicated Danish snacks, such as sticky cinnamon buns and salmon served on dark rye bread.

Gondolen
Perched atop the iconic Katarinahissen (the vintage Slussen elevator), Gondolen combines killer city views with contemporary Nordic brilliance from chef Erik Lallerstedt. Play ‘spot the landmark’ while carving into gems like thyme-roasted halibut with lobster sauce and root-vegetable cake.

b5
With its barely-there name and super-sleek interior, this bistro-bar flirts with pretentiousness but is actually a very mellow place. Pop in for the comfy seating, light Scandinavian-style bistro meals, games consoles for the kids to borrow and funky tunes on Friday and Saturday nights.

Café Ópera
Soothing Café Opera, based upstairs in an old merchant's house, occasionally has a piano player tickling the ivories. The house speciality is the entertaining 'Hot Rock Fantasy' - sizzling meat or fish steaks that you get to 'cook' yourself on slabs of mountain granite.

A local favourite, this friendly, relaxed place in the centre of town has an excellent all-you-can-eat soup and salad bar (Ikr1500) and an extensive menu featuring everything from pizza, fish and lamb to such Icelandic favourites as puffin, whale and horse meat.

Einar Ben
One of the city’s finest restaurants, Einar Ben is frequented by diplomats and is renowned for its top-class service and gastronomical marvels. Dishes are Icelandic with a continental twist – think puffin terrine, and lamb Dijon with blueberries and thyme.

Collage
One of our favourite restaurants in Trafalgar, Collage serves wonderful food (the rollitos de alce, ‘reindeer rolls’, are a spectacular entrée) and the whole atmosphere is casual but sleek in a Swedish kind of way.

Múlakaffi
Shining-white walls and brand-new tables can’t disguise Múlakaffi’s old-fashioned soul. Hearty local meals such as meatballs, salt cod, roast pork and rye bread are dished up from the hotplate.

Restaurante Nabão
Just next door to the Bela Vista, this modern place also has very good, carefully presented regional cuisine, plus large windows looking out onto the river.
