Noodle restaurants in Europe

  1. Sabor

Right next to Selimiye Mosque, this is decidedly North Nicosia's trendiest restaurant. Stylish wooden tables inside are surrounded by leather sofas in the lounge area; colourful lamps swing low; fashion photos adorn the walls. The large terrace is on the square, and on Wednesdays and Fridays there is live jazz piano music.

Its excellent Italian and Spanish food is especially good for those days when you can't take another kebab, although there are oriental-style noodles too, and the prices are surprisingly low. The espresso and cappuccino are just right.

    Boogaloos

Chilled out Boogaloos serves up tasty sandwiches, salads and hot lunches in a cosy Georgian town house with warm colours, big sofas and mellow music. Make up your own sandwich or go for pasta, fish cakes or hot dishes such as chicken with mozzarella and basil.

For hearty fare try the Noodle Bar for bowls of steaming noodles and generous rice dishes.

  4. C

    Enrico's

Low-slung coffee tables and leather sofas line the windows, with a more classical set-up at the back for evening dining. Prices are lower than you might expect from the décor, and the wide-ranging world menu contains some stomach-pleasing items. Lunchtime soups, salads, noodles and sandwiches are particularly good value.

    La Botte

Although it doesn't have a sexy beachfront location, this eatery just off Corso Ruggero continues to send out good food. It has excellent antipasti and pasta dishes, and its house special, casarecce alla botte (short pasta with a meat sauce), is good if you fancy a change from fish.

  6. E

    Circus

If you like to linger over your meal, look elsewhere, but for those of you who enjoy your noodles with plenty of coconut milk and lime juice, this place is excellent. Stylish but fresh and cheerful, it revels in its slightly offbeat motto of ‘Very Fashion Fast Food’.

    Stern

During the day and early evening Stern is a fine restaurant with a focus on salads, wok and pasta dishes served at outdoor tables on Kameliterplatz; when the sun sets, its cellar-like interior morphs into a bar, featuring DJs every Friday and Saturday, and live acts on Sunday.

    Yamamoto

Yamamoto is refreshingly authentic in an age when Chinese restaurants are reinventing themselves as lucrative sushi bars; it’s Japanese owned and run, and gets its sushi delivered throughout the week, so it’s always fresh and, like the noodle dishes, delicious.

    Il Covo del Pirata

A cheap spot for a quick lunch. Il Covo serves sandwiches, a limited number of pasta dishes and filling salads. Ask for a seat on the tiny terrace overlooking the port. At night it turns into a club.

    L'Antica Corte

Housed in a lovely old cortile (courtyard), this is one of the better restaurants in town but it can get very busy. Go for a plate of traditional Sicilian pasta or a simple pizza.
