Bæjarins Beztu
Icelanders are utterly addicted to hot dogs, and they swear the best are those from Bæjarins Beztu, a van situated near the harbour that’s patronised by Bill Clinton! Use the vital sentence Eina með öllu (‘One with everything’) to get one with mustard, tomato sauce (ketchup), rémoulade and crunchy onions.

Baguetteria
Fast food. Fresh food. Cheap food. What more do you need to know? This is one of the few places in Moscow where somebody will make you a sandwich. Not an open-face buterbrod but a real sandwich on a fresh-baked baguette. The interior has all the charm of your local McD’s so you may want to order your sandwich to go and sit on the Arbat.

Bagel Station
This local chain serves good New York-style bagels to students from the nearby uni, who hang out with their laptops talking, surfing and even studying (or so it seems). You can linger over coffee, muffins and bagels here while planning your next moves in the neighbourhood, catching up on emails from home or using it as your mobile office for a while.

At the ferry terminal, just beside the tourist office, the young team at this airy, welcoming place put on a handful of tasty hot dishes, good salads and snackier items such as focaccia, wraps and sandwiches. There’s also an internet terminal (Nkr1 per minute).

Great British Eatery
Slide onto a bar stool and inhale the tang of vinegar at this award winning chippy. There are pies and sausages aplenty, meal deals from £2 and roast chicken and chips from £3.50. You can wash it all down with a beer, too.

Point of Sale
Situated in the alternative strip of Wieden on the cusp of Margareten, the Point of Sale draws a colourful crowd for light dishes, ranging from chicken satay through pasta to burgers. There’s lounge-type seating in a front mezzanine level, benches along the side and regular seating out back. You can do a lot here: eat very decently, surf to find your next port of call or simply hang out over a drink. Vegetarians and vegans are well catered for, as are those looking for a good breakfast, which is served until 3pm.

Bitzinger Würstelstand Am Albertinaplatz
Vienna has very many sausage stands but this one located behind the Staatsoper offers the contrasting spectacle of ladies and gents dressed to the nines, sipping wine while enjoying sausage at outdoor tables after performances. It’s no coincidence that here you find Moët & Chandon (€19.90 for 0.2L); for the less well-heeled, there’s house wine (€2.80) and Stiegl Goldbräu beer (€2.90). Prime winter position is at the heated counter.

Lemon
Dublin's best pancake joint is staffed by a terrific bunch who like their music loud and their pancakes good: proper paper-thin sweet and savoury crepes smothered, stuffed and sprinkled with a variety of toppings, fillings and sauces. There's a second branch on nearby Dawson St.

Markthalle
Buzzing in atmosphere and quick-snack action, this covered market arcade is jam-packed with cheap eateries from around the world: curries, vegetarian, wok stir-fries, bruschette, noodles, pizza, southern Indian, Turkish, Middle Eastern. You name it, it’s here – to be eaten standing at bars or around plastic tables.

Nando's
If you must do real fast food, Nando’s is one of the better options in London, offering chicken a la portuguesa by way of Africa and Brazil from as many as 65 outlets, including a Camden branch. The decor is colourful and upbeat, the ambience laid-back and the signature peri-peri (chilli) sauce fiery.

Divan's
Off the main drag, this restaurant-café-fast-food joint is a judiciously laid-out complex, where you can nosh on burgers, pizzas, ready-made meals and kebaps. With its fountain and breezy outdoor seating, it's a great place to loll after a day's sightseeing. For an energy bolt, slug down a freshly squeezed orange juice.

Café Cultura
Cosmopolitan Cultura has scratched-up wooden floors, mosaic tables, and well-priced Asian, Mediterranean- and Arabic-influenced nosh - stir-fries, felafel, spicy meatballs and cous-cous cuisine. There's a tolerant attitude to kids. Free tango lessons start at 20:00 on Wednesday, and it becomes a funky bar at weekends.

Snadderkiosken
We don’t normally direct you to the fast-food kiosks that are everywhere in Norway, but Snadderkiosken is one of the best of its kind in Norway. Near the town beach, it has an extensive and great-value menu, with things such as hearty meatballs and mashed potatoes or grilled chicken with rice and salad.

Blin Donalt’s
This funny fast-food joint has somehow avoided legal action from a certain well-known American chain. Here you get fast-food bliny (crepes), chicken Kiev and borscht (beetroot soup) – all as far from the real thing as McDonald’s apple pie, but a fascinating comment on post–Soviet Russia.
