European restaurants in Europe

  1. A

    Meeting Place

The name aptly describes this club/restaurant, which attracts a constant stream of regulars. The food gets mixed reviews, but it's filling and affordable; the many varieties of pelmeni (dumplings) are particularly popular. Most people come for the friendly atmosphere, summertime garden cafe and free wi-fi access.

  2. B

    Shesh-Besh in Zamoskvorechie

Following the newest trend in restaurants - rhyming names - Shesh-Besh is a chain offering hearty Azeri fare. The thick soup is easily a meal in itself, as is the extensive salad bar. The place is not overly atmospheric - this the TGI Friday's of Azeri cuisine - but the food is still spicy and prices are affordable.

  4. D

    Chelsea Kitchen

This spartan place - part of the Stockpot empire which has branches all around town - has some of the cheapest food in London and is almost like eating out at a restaurant. Sturdy staples include the likes of French onion soup, spaghetti bolognese, lasagne and steak. Nothing too inventive, just good, hot grub.

  5. E

    Gostišče Pri Treh Ribnikih

A great place for a meal if you want to get out of the city but don't feel like travelling is the 'Inn at the Three Fishponds' in City Park. Oddly, its specialities are cheese štruklji (dumplings) and stuffed pork ribs, with fish all but banished from the menu. There's quite a good wine card.

  6. F

    Restaurang Niklas

Niklas is one of Sweden's top TV chefs; he opened his restaurant here in 2000, and it's now a highly feted institution. The menu is influenced by classic Provençale cookery, but the gourmet touches are all his own. If you're going to treat yourself, make it here: just look for the giant iron spoon!

  7. G

    698

A very stylish bistro and coffee lounge with a modern European menu (pan-fried scallops on pea purée to start, followed by grilled fillet steak with creamy mash and a wild mushroom jus), the 698 is also family-friendly, with high-chairs, baby-changing facilities, and books and toys to borrow.

  8. H

    La Maison du Prussie

This one-time brewery in a grand old house, enclosed by woods and cradled by the impetuous babbling of a nearby brook, is a treat – and it has great rooms too. Hop aboard Cormondrèche-bound bus 1 from Place Pury, alight at Beauregard and head down the stairs to your right following the signs.

  9. I

    De 7e Hemel

Details matter at De 7e Hemel: it even goes so far as to import Scottish mineral water direct from the Glens because of its purity. The menu, which combines vegan, fish and meat dishes, changes seasonally. Cherubs, chandeliers and calming yellow shades all help to create a cosy, romantic air.

  10. J

    Ristorante Logge Vasari

This restaurant has a terrace fronting Piazza Grande, two pleasant interior rooms and class that defies stereotypically dire 'piazza cuisine'. The menu degustazione is a parade of flavours and interesting flourishes to local dishes. Let your server choose the wine - he'll be right.

  12. K

    Eleven

Michelin-starred Eleven lives up to the hype. Perched above Parque Eduardo VII, this aesthetically stunning restaurant is a fusion of glass walls and Joana Vasconcelos art. Chef Joachim Koerper conjures up inventive flavours such as sardine delight with artichoke and olive oil ice cream.

  13. L

    Market Square Brasserie

Tucked away in the basement of an attractive Georgian house, the food here is creatively prepared and artfully presented. Local purveyors supply the best produce, meats and seafood for an ever-changing menu. Service is smooth, the wine list long and the setting intimate. Book in advance.

  14. M

    Pod Lwem

Named after the evocative bas-relief on its facade, this cute cafe 'under the lion' is a fine place for a tasty breakfast or a light lunch. Specialities such as grilled eggplant and chicken in mustard-cream sauce are a nice change of pace from bigos (stew) and pierogi.

  15. N

    Gostišče Loka

Situated right on the Krka River, just beyond the small footbridge linking the two banks, the 'Meadow' serves decent fish dishes and is the place to try Cviček, the uniquely Slovenian light (9%) red wine from Dolenjska. There's garden seating available in the warmer months.

  16. O

    Avocado

Believe it or not, there is not an ounce of guacamole on this menu. Rather, the sophisticated European fare includes delights such as roasted lamb in chèvre sauce or grilled salmon with strawberry salsa. Take a seat on the lovely patio, or retreat indoors into contemporary chic.

  17. Le Lion d’Or

Formal and packed with suits, the Golden Lion sits in the heart of Cologny, Geneva’s most expensive ’burb. Mouth-watering fish and seafood creations honour a fine wine list. To avoid blowing a small fortune, dine in the cheaper bistro, which has a flowery garden.

  18. P

    La Truffe Noire

Truffle junkies will be left breathless by this elegant boutique restaurant specialising in black truffles and cuisine from southwestern France. Rapée de truffe (grated truffle; around CHF48) followed by cuisse de canard (duck thigh) is a typical feast.

  19. Q

    Orange Tree

This award-winning brasserie adds a dash of Continental flair to local fish, meat and game. Try to resist the Brixham crab lasagne with crab bisque or the south Devon steak with a rich blue cheese sauce. Then succumb to Chocolate Temptation, a brownie, mousse and parfait combo.

  20. R

    Moll Darby’s

Exposed brick, dark wood and bundles of nautical schlock make Moll’s an attractive and atmospheric choice on George’s Quay. The red-checked tablecloths add a jaunty air, which will only intensify as you slurp down the superb oysters and other seasonal seafood delights.

  21. S

    Salomon's

This designer restaurant in a former law courts building is smart enough to impress a business partner or date, but there are a few bench seats where you won't feel alone dining on the Eurasian cuisine. A bar, courtyard and club are found in the same complex.

  23. T

    Jacobus Pieck

Touches such as freshly squeezed OJ put this tidy bistro on a higher plane. The menu bursts with fresh dishes, from salads and sandwiches at lunch to more complex pasta and seafood choices at dinner. Staff are welcoming; snag a sunny table on the back patio.

  24. Brick Oven

Generally rammed to the gills, this is a family favourite thanks to its cunningly divided menu and chirpy atmosphere. Kids can pig out on pizza, while their discerning parents feast on more adult fare such as sun-dried tomato risotto and roast monkfish.

  25. Restaurant zum Salzbaron

One of the best gourmet acts in town, the Salzbaron is perched alongside the lake inside the Seehotel Grüner Baum and serves a seasonal pan-European menu; local trout features strongly in summer.

  26. U

    Harry's

Harry's is the kind of welcoming neighbourhood bistro you wish was on your own doorstep but rarely is. The decor is all wooden chairs, blackboards and gilt mirrors; the food includes seared tuna, Spanish ham with marinated figs, and a hearty three bean chilli.

  27. Restavracija JB Podvin

This sister-restaurant of the similarly named establishment in Ljubljana has raised the standards of dining in Gorenjska in one fell swoop. It's next door to the Grad Podvin hotel about 4km southeast of Radovljica in the village of Mošnje.
