Aura
Aura is an interesting mix – American deli by day dishing out giant sandwiches, and wine bar and restaurant day and night. Muted tones entice diners into its soft, relaxing environment, ideal for a wonderful meal. The early evening dinner special means small mains are only £7, including Moroccan beef or mussels in garlic sauce. There’s plenty for vegetarians, too. On our visit the amateurish service was a letdown.

Elephant & Castle
If it’s massive New York–style sandwiches or sticky chicken wings you’re after, this bustling upmarket diner is just the joint. Be prepared to queue though, especially at weekends when Elephant & Castle heaves with the hassled parents of wandering toddlers, wealthy suburbanites and hung-over 20-somethings, all in pursuit of a carb-fest and quiet corner to peruse the paper.

Liberty Grill
A gleaming white outpost on an otherwise faded street of brick facades, the Liberty Grill is popular for its locally sourced menu of crowd pleasers, like traditional breakfasts, burgers, sandwiches, salads and slightly more ambitious dinner fare. Think of it as a diner for foodies.

Bimbo Veikro
Just 2km north of town, this roadhouse serves up the usual sandwiches, pizzas and grills and is also an Arctic Menu restaurant, offering more subtle fare. ‘Bimbo’ alludes to a nearby elephant-shaped rock formation, not the classy waitresses.

Bliny Bar
Superb stuffed bliny made to order in a fast-food-style diner. There's another branch on the 3rd floor of the City Tsentr shopping mall which has a useful 1st-floor supermarket and whose Voskhod Bakery stand has great cheese strudels.

John Lemon
This small diner with orange walls and a pink bar is open until 05:00 on Friday and Saturday nights, but is a great spot for noshing any time. The calzone-like lavash are a bargain.

Starlite Diner
The extensive breakfast menu includes all kinds of omelettes, French toast and freshly squeezed juice. Otherwise, you can’t go wrong with burgers and milkshakes, any time of day or night.

Parakeet Diner
Has not a frill to be seen, right down to the plastic-backed chairs, but service comes with a smile, it's easy on your wallet and its generous portions help fuel the day's activities.

American country kitchen meets greasy spoon at this colourful Canadian-owned diner. There's a chill-out room upstairs and surprises like stuffed schnitzel on the menu.

Oastler's Pie & Mash
What could be more 'south coast' than good ole pie, mash, stewed oysters and liquor (parsley sauce) for the London day-tripper crowd. Austere 1950s setting and simple but delicious grub.

Buffet dining in a cosy space sprinkled with potted plants and bench seating. Select your daily special from one of the woks on the counter, choose a drink and wait for your grub to arrive in double-quick time.

City Diner
This place is wall-to-wall with street signs and license plates in a reaching attempt to create a 1950s American diner. The menu of Philly cheese steaks, bacon burgers and cheese fries is geared towards homesick Americans in dire need of cholesterol. The English-speaking waitstaff provides friendly service.
