Popular and teeming with locals, this cafe (order and pay at the counter) is a handy place to load up on sandwiches, soup, filling-and-full-on porky bacon and sausage breakfast, or vegetarian toad-in-the-hole.

This lacy cafe is the spot for a classic cream tea, served in a bone-china pot and accompanied by buttery scones or Victoria sponges.

Apothecary
With it's crammed bookshelves, beat up leather sofas and antique wood panelling, Rye's most characterful coffee house is a great spot to curl up with a brew and a novel while you watch shoppers scuttle by from the huge old corner windows.

Snaxx
Next to party-loving bar Jaxx, Snaxx does a mean open sandwich. Our personal favourite: prosciutto with garlicky crème fraîche and chives.

Sacher
Nowhere is the chocolate richer, the apricot jam tangier and cream lighter than at the home of the legendary Sacher Torte. The cafe is pure old-world grandeur, with its picture-lined walls and ruby-red banquettes. Sit on the terrace by the Salzach for fortress views.

Pur
Opposite the Keltenmuseum and with a terrace by the Salzach, this relaxed cafe is done out in zesty colours and fruit-themed artworks. The organic breakfasts are great, as are the baguettes, ice creams and the coffee (roasted in Hallein).

Ohhh, this place is dangerous. Bringing Belgian chocolates to the Highlands, Maya is the ultimate in sweet indulgence. It also serves up hot drinks, including hot chocolate…which goes perfectly with a box of chocolates.

April
Bright flower pots and upside-down watering cans guide the way to this wholesomely hip and wonderfully laid-back cafe. Bag a spot on one of the sofas or on the pocket-sized terrace for a latte adorned with flowers or butterflies (Ingo is a ‘coffee artist’). Lavish breakfasts, open sandwiches and homemade cakes feature on the all-organic menu. Riojas are paired with tapas on Thursday evenings. There’s a book exchange.
