    Sütçü Fevzi

Sütçü Fevzi has a few tables set up outside. Sütçü Fevzi will give you a typical Van breakfast experience. Van is famed for its tasty kahvaltı (breakfast). Skip the usually bland breakfast that is served in your hotel and head straight to Eski Sümerbank Sokak, also called 'Kahvaltı Sokak' (Breakfast St), a pedestrianised side street running parallel to Cumhuriyet Caddesi.

Drool over otlu peynir (cheese mixed with a tangy herb, Van's speciality), beyaz peynir (a mild yellow cheese), honey from the highlands (mmm!), olives, kayma (clotted cream), butter, tomatoes, cucumbers and yumurta (eggs).

    Biblioteka

We've always felt that a library and a drinking den were a natural combination of pleasures. Biblioteka provides both. Books and magazines are racked up for reading, while waiters in cheeky red-banded bowlers, green checked shirts and large skirt aprons flit around to help with your drink and food requests. Many come here to meet friends, and the unobtrusive background music allows for quiet conversation or reading. Breakfasts are served until 13:00.

    Mandala Suites Lounge

Like froth on a cappuccino, the 8th-floor lounge of this mod, Kleihues-designed hotel floats above the rooftops, offering a quiet and elegant sanctuary. The buffet (which includes champagne and hot drinks) is opulent, first-rate and constantly refreshed, but the views of Potsdamer Platz – and perhaps the sleek Bauhaus-inspired furnishings – are just as memorable. Reservations essential. Free wi-fi.

    King’s Stables

The sprawling, summer-only King’s Stables, opposite the Hikers Hostel, occupies a rolling hill ending in Roman walls. Offerings range from breakfast crepes to hearty meat dishes such as Thracian gouviech (melting cheese and sausage with seasonings cooked in a clay pot). It also features that relative rarity in Bulgaria – friendly service. The restaurant has two adjacent cafés.

    Slovan

Slovan’s white walls, dark wooden panelling and brown floor tiles make it one of Ivano’s most stylish restaurants and its wooden-decked terrace is a popular spot to be seen on in summer. Breakfasts (French, Italian or Hutsul; 15uah) are complemented by homemade pastas, gourmet fillets of beef and humble fare such as jacket potatoes (8uah) and pizza (19uah to 37uah).

    Die Herren Simpel

The sky-blue mural with huge white flowers behind the bar has become this cafe's signature. Its tiny entrance opens to an unexpectedly spacious series of retro rooms, plus a winter garden niche and al fresco tables out back. There's a fantastic range of breakfasts, from the fishy Sylter (from Sylt) to the healthy Frucht (fruit), along with light meals.

    Atelier Café

Summer breakfasts are the best here, because you can sit in the lovely courtyard in the historic inner-city district of Hesslingen, five minutes east of Porschestrasse. You can also head inside the half-timbered house, where three meals a day are served in a modern industrial-style bistro of concrete, glass and steel. Ask the tourist office for a map and directions.

Opposite the post office, this is a very popular, grungy hang-out serving excellent all-day breakfasts, chilli, homemade lasagne and burgers. It is a great place to eat or drink, and there’s something on most weeknights, including a Friday night disco. Good options for vegetarians, too.

    Pacific Café

In the SakhinCentr, this all-Western standard self-serve café is a de facto business-meeting venue. The Texas-big ‘business lunch’ fills trays from noon to 3pm weekdays; you can get a burger (R270) and fries (R60) anytime, or order an American breakfast.

    Café Azul

This little Italian-owned place packs ’em in every day for Tarifa’s best breakfasts. The muesli, fruit salad and yoghurt is large and tasty, or choose one of the excellent crêpes. There’s good coffee, juices and shakes, plus bocadillos (filled rolls) and cakes.

  20. Q

    Marble City Bar

This stylishly mod bar manages to stand out. Usual bar standards like sausage & mash and fish & chips are elevated above the norm through the use of excellent ingredients. A lower-level café facing St Kieran's St has breakfasts, coffees and outdoor tables.

    Zara Pizzara

This pizzeria has an enviously located summer terrace, real Italian-style thin-crust pizza loaded with toppings, and hefty calzones. What sets it apart is that it actually opens before 9am for breakfast. For that we’ll excuse the overpriced beer.
