    Café Charbon

With its post-industrial belle époque ambience, the Charbon was the first of the hip cafés and bars to catch on in Ménilmontant. It’s always crowded and worth heading to for the distressed décor with high ceilings, chandeliers and perched DJ booth. The food (mains €14 to €18) is good; it’s a popular spot for brunch (€15) between noon and 4pm on Sundays.

    El Café Sin Nombre

The ‘Café With No Name’ is one of Conde Duque’s many well-kept secrets, the sort of place where in-the-know Madrileños gravitate while the tourists go elsewhere. With its exposed brickwork and wooden beams, it’s a classy look that comes alive late at night with the dull roar of Madrileños at play.

    Twelfth House

This is a lovely Notting Hill coffee house with a kooky edge. The bar is dominated by an amazing astrological clock and the owner will work out your astrological chart (£5) or read your ‘tarot card of the day’ (£3).

  4. D

    Bristol Bar

You could come here for the English breakfast (€13) or the brunch (€21), but we like this place for its 75 different types of gin. The atmosphere is that of a quiet café by day, a sophisticated gin parlour after sunset.

    Locandita

Good for a drink or pastry at any hour of the day, this friendly little bar is a bright place to rest during your Chamberí explorations.
