    Burgermeister

A burger joint in a century-old public toilet on a traffic island below the elevated U-Bahn tracks? Don't fret, don't shudder, for the patties here are big and delicious.

    Breakfast in America

This American-style diner, complete with red banquettes and Formica surfaces, is as authentic as you’ll find outside the US of A. Breakfast, served all day and with free coffee refills, starts at just under €7, and there are generous burgers, chicken wings and fish and chips (€8.50 to €11.50). There’s also a Latin Quarter branch ([tel] 01 43 54 50 28; 17 rue des Écoles, 5e; [metro] Cardinal Lemoine) that opens the same hours.

    Starlite Diner

Outdoor seating and classic diner decor make this a long-time favourite of Moscow expats. The extensive breakfast menu includes all kinds of omelettes, French toast and freshly squeezed juice. Otherwise, you can’t go wrong with burgers and milkshakes, any time of day or night. A second, less atmospheric outlet is in Zamoskvorechie.

    Square One

The laid-back, congenial atmosphere and English-speaking wait staff are attractive, as is the nonsmoking lounge upstairs. The American-orientated menu features sandwiches, pizzas, pastas, salads, burgers and tasty breakfasts (served all day).

    Bird

New York with a dollop of Berlin is what you’ll get at this chatty, boozy gastro-pub that may well serve the best burgers this side of the Hudson River. Roll up your sleeves and sink your teeth into a dripping half-pounder made from freshly ground steak trapped between a toasted English muffin (yes, it’s messy; that’s what the kitchen roll is for!). For Survivor fans there’s the ‘Big Bird’ challenge’: 750g of beef with the works and a pile of fries. If you finish it, it’s free. If not, it’s €29.

    Joe Allen

This long-established late-night (open till 01:00 most nights) restaurant is always packed with West End actors and crew members and remains star-spotters' paradise. There's a real buzz here and it gets crowded, so book ahead. Starters and main dishes (lamb chops, grilled halibut etc) are varied, but you won't find its legendary burgers on the menu; just ask. Come here too for breakfast (from 08:00 weekdays) or weekend brunch (from 11:30).

The menu isn't cheap, but you're paying for atmosphere, the late opening hours and some great star-spotting opportunities.

    Christopher's

This sleek American bar and grill is housed in a vast Georgian mansion just off the Strand. Its interior is suitably grand, with a busy downstairs bar and a stylish upstairs dining room, where classic but clever dishes such as blackened salmon with jambalaya risotto are served up next to a wonderful array of gargantuan USDA steaks and surf and turf combinations. Brunch (11:30 to 15:30) at the weekend pulls in the crowds.

    Naschmarkt Deli

Among the many enticing stands along the Vienna River, Naschmarkt Deli has an edge on the others for its delicious snacks. Sandwiches, felafel wraps, big baguettes and quick soups (lentil soup is a good bet) fill the menu, but much space is dedicated to a heady array of breakfasts. Come Saturday morning this glass box overflows with punters waiting in anticipation for the continental or English breakfast.

    Stars 'n' Bars

This American bar-restaurant just doesn't lose its touch. A long-time hot spot, its portside terrace remains one of Monaco's sexiest - as does its busy interior plastered with sporting memorabilia. TexMex platters, buffalo wings, burgers and a generous dose of vegetarian dishes plump out a family-friendly menu, while fusion is the essence upstairs at the grown-up sushi and cocktail club Fusion.

    Bugsy’s

This immensely popular place – it’s heaving at lunchtime, especially with expats – is done up to resemble a Prohibition-era Chicago speakeasy from the 1920s. Food is the please-everyone easy option: Tex-Mex, salads, ploughman’s lunches, burgers (€12.50 to €14.50) and the intriguing entrecôte irlandaise (Irish rib steak). The huge bar keeps going till 1am daily.

  12. K

    Harlem

The funky feel, chunky chandeliers and smiling staff are just the first things that might impress you about this excellent restaurant serving black American cuisine. The menu is just as noteworthy, including such exotica as buttermilk fried chicken, fried catfish and chicken and shrimp gumbo. It's a great place for a meal, and breakfast is served until 18:00 every day.

    Katie’s Diner

As you might expect from a place run by a husband-and-wife team, this cute little diner has a warm, welcome and homely atmosphere. The handful of tables enjoy a view onto the parkland of Bruntsfield Links, and the menu runs from barbecue chicken wings and nachos to prime Scottish steaks and juicy homemade burgers with fries and coleslaw.

    Hard Rock Cafe

At long last, those souvenir T-shirts reading `Hard Rock Cafe Moscow' actually mean something. This is the real deal, complete with framed guitars, chicken wings and gift shop. The rock-n-roll memorabilia does not include enough representation from Russian rock stars, but there are a few notable exceptions. Live music on weekends.

    Tartane

The lamps and Meissen tile mural are scavenged from the demolished GDR-era Palast der Republik, but otherwise this stylish gastro pub is very much in the here and now. Most nights tables buzz with an arty, local crowd wolfing Tartane's luscious signature burgers and downing glasses of refreshing Kölsch beer from Cologne.

  16. O

    Arkansas Café

Good ole down-home Arkansas barbecue is what is served up in this unprepossessing unit on the edges of Spitalfields Market. Whether you're tucking into platters of pork ribs, corn-fed chicken or steak, you can rest assured they'll be of truly excellent quality, with lots of potatoes, coleslaw and other stuff on the side.

    Tinseltown

Tinseltown is an American-style basement diner, serving pretty average pastas, burgers and grills. But its big advantage is the fact that it is open 24-hours a day, seven days a week, which is a boon to the after-club crowds who are looking for no-frills recovery food rather than an exquisite gourmet meal.

  18. Q

    Buffalo Grill

This Stockbridge incarnation of Buffalo Grill is a bit more spacious than the original branch, but has the same Wild West decor and beefy, all-American menu. Unlike the original branch this place is fully licensed, but they still allow you to BYOB if you prefer (£1 corkage per bottle of wine).

  19. Şəbəkə Restaurant

If you’re craving Western food, this suave jazz-toned hotel-restaurant offers professionally presented dishes at prices that seem expensive in Şəki but would be cheap as chips in Baku. Our penne in pesto sauce (AZN3.20) was perfectly al dente if lacking in pizzazz.

    Breakfast in America, Latin Quarter

This American-style diner, complete with red banquettes and Formica surfaces, is as authentic as you’ll find outside the US of A. Breakfast, served all day and with free coffee refills, starts at €6.50, and there are generous burgers, chicken wings and fish and chips.

    Joe Farelli's

A casual Italian-American restaurant-bar, where you can slap ketchup on your US burgers 'n' steaks, or get misty-eyed about the old country with Sicilian-style bruschetta, pizza and pasta. Its Sunday brunch is perfect for soaking up Saturday night's beer.

    Sister's Café

For a break with French tradition, try this relaxed 1950s-style American diner with club sandwiches, chicken fajitas, spinach salads and great weekend brunches. Mustard and ketchup are table standards.

    Barcomi's Deli

Train your java radar onto this buzzing New York-meets-Berlin deli where latte-rati, families and expats meet for coffee, bagels with lox and some of the best brownies and cheesecake this side of the Hudson River.

  26. V

    Scandal

Scandal is a brash American dream, part Wild West, part Mae West, where charcoal-grilled steaks are as big as states. The spare ribs and brownies are legendary.

  27. Boogie Woogie

This hugely popular but by no means spectacular food factory serves American and European fodder amid pop memorabilia set to get guests tapping their toes.
