Theatre entertainment in Europe

  1. A

    Théâtre National

By virtue of being a bilingual city, the Belgian capital has not one but two national theatres. This spanking-new glass-fronted theatre is the Francophone counterpart of the Flemish Koninklijke Vlaamse Schouwburg.

  2. B

    Gate Theatre

The city’s most elegant theatre, housed in a late-18th-century building, features a generally unflappable repertory of classic American and European plays. Orson Welles’ first professional performance was here, and James Mason played here early in his career. Even today it is the only theatre in town where you might see established international movie stars work on their credibility with a theatre run.

    Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz

Nonconformist, radical and provocative: performances at the ‘People’s Stage’ are not for the squeamish. Since 1992, the theatre has been led by enfant terrible Frank Castorf who regularly tears down the confines of the proscenium stage with Zeitgeist-critical productions that are somehow both populist and elitist all at once.
