Alter Ego
This is Budapest’s premier gay club, with the chic-est (think attitude) crowd and the best dance music on offer. It can be cruisy, but if you’re seriously looking for action, go to the bar of that name.

Café Moskau
Still flaunting 1960s flair, this snazzy commie-era restaurant now hosts special club and concert nights as well as Sunday's GMF (www.gmf-berlin.de in German) gay parties with buff and bronzed boyz enjoying high-energy pop and house. Rumour has it that GMF may move in 2007, so check the website or the Zitty (www.zitty.de), Tip (www.tip-berlin.de) listings magazines.

De Trut
Just west of the Jordaan, this Sunday-night club is a lesbian institution held in the basement of a former squat. Its name means ‘the tart’ and it comes with an attitude; arrive well before 11pm (the space only fits 220 people), and know that heteros are definitely not welcome.

La Fulanita de Tal
Run by women, this outrageously uninhibited nightclub draws a predominantly lesbian crowd, but the club’s refusal to stay within boundaries means gay men, hetero couples and just about anyone can turn up here. The music’s mostly pop dance tunes, with a bit of funk and R&B.

Café April
April is known for its hopping happy hour, relaxed atmosphere (even when it’s packed) and beautiful guys who cram in to flirt and drink. After a massive refurbishment, the joint is now snazzier and larger, and includes no fewer than three bars.

Cockring
This popular club has a disco downstairs playing techno and trance, while upstairs is a hot cruising area; leather boys are particularly welcome. Look for live strip shows and ‘shoes only’ parties.

Connection
This classic men-only disco was a techno pioneer way back in the '80s and still hasn't lost its grip on the scene. The labyrinth of underground darkrooms is legendary.

This cool space has a long bar and a spacious dance floor that sees lots of girl-on-girl action on Saturdays. Thursdays are more low-key chat sessions.

Fortify yourself at Melitta Sundström, then head to the basement to work the dance floors. A good place to ease into the scene for all comers.
