Kvarnen
A cheerful mix of Hammarby football fans and Left Party former communists regularly packs Kvarnen, one of the best bars in Söder. The vast beer hall dates from 1907 and seeps tradition; beyond the scruffy old beerhounds and college boys, though, there are two slick bar-nightclubs – one red, one blue, both pumping. Queues are fairly constant but utterly justifiable.

Lunas Strandgarten
Perhaps a little too neat and chic for this Friedrichshain grunge strip, but still a fun spot to chill, play beach volleyball or cool off in the tiny pool. Gets street cred for being next to the railway track and brownie points for the cool street art mural.

Brouwerij ‘tIj
The tasting room of Amsterdam’s leading organic microbrewery has a cosy, down-and-dirty beer-hall feel. Bonus: most of the suds made here never leave the premises, so it’s fresh and ecofriendly – and located at the foot of a big ol’ windmill.

De Bekeerde Suster
It’s got the brew tanks, it’s got the beautiful hardwood interior, it’s even got the history – a 16th-century brewery-cloister run by nuns. Stop in for a meal of pub grub, or make it the start of an evening on Nieuwmarkt.

Cafe am Neuen See
This lakeside Bavarian-style beer garden in Tiergarten park feels like a micro-vacation from the city bustle. Cold beers go well with the bratwurst, pizza and pretzels. Romantic types can even rent a boat and take their sweetie for an aquatic glide.

In De Wildman
An oasis in the otherwise grim tourist ghetto south of Centraal Station, In De Wildman has seats outside on the quiet street and a good selection of beers (mostly from Belgium and Holland, but also the potent French ‘Belzebuth’ with 13% alcohol).

Heinz Minki
This rambling beer garden with its old trees and coloured twinkle lights is an enchanting spot for wrapping up a day of turf-pounding. It’s behind an old customs house whose red-brick walls also enclose a teensy bar that’s open year-round.

Občerstvení U Okénka
Not a proper beer garden as such, but a collection of outdoor tables with a view over Vyšehrad Gardens – a pleasant spot for a beer on a sunny day, with bottled Braník at only 16Kč for 0.5L.

't Arendsnest
It is a restyled brown cafe, serves only Dutch beer – but with more than 300 varieties (many from small breweries) including 23 on tap, you’ll need to move here to try them all.

Gollem
All the brew-related paraphernalia in this miniscule space barely leaves room for the 200 beers and the connoisseurs who come to try them. The bartenders are happy to advise.
