Beer Hall entertainment in Europe

A
Hofbräuhaus
The mothership of all beer halls, every visitor to Munich should at some point make a pilgrimage to this temple of ale, if only once. The swigging hordes of tourists, swaying to the inevitable oompah band, is like something from a film set.

Exclusive
A basement beer joint, Exclusive is Belgrade's answer to a Munich beer hall. There's plenty of knees-up music in this lads' bar, with big snacks - sausage, bread and chips - as a sound bedrock for serious drinking.

Malzmühle
Expect plenty of local colour at this convivial beer hall off the beaten tourist track. It brews Kölsch with organic ingredients and is also known for its lighter Malzbier (malt beer, 2% alcohol).

D
s’Stöckl
There are no airs and graces about this spit-and-sawdust watering hole – a fine spot for Gösser brews and long chats at the bar. Cocktails are a bargain €3.50 during happy hour (8pm to 11pm).

Empty chairs are a rare sight at this locals’ favourite that has excellent food. There's a fine beer garden and should you need divine inspiration for just one more stangen, Romanesque St Ursula is just across the square.

Caru cu Bere
Despite a decidedly tourist-leaning atmosphere, with servers in peasant costumes and sporadic Roma song-and-dance numbers, Bucharest's oldest beer house continues to draw in a strong local crowd. The colourful belleépoque interior and stained-glass windows dazzle. Try the mixed sausage platter (for two!), which, while delicious, has enough grease for a month. Dinner reservations recommended.

Augustiner Bräustuben
Depending on the wind, an aroma of hops envelops you as you approach this ultra-authentic beer hall inside the actual Augustiner brewery and hence popular with the brewmeisters themselves (there's an entire table reserved just for them). The Bavarian grub here is superb, especially the Schweinshaxe. Giant black draft horses are stabled behind glass on your way to the loo.
