Art, Film entertainment in Europe

  1. Filmbar Im Kesselhaus

This sleek student restaurant and bar is the hub of eating and drinking activity on the university campus. Beyond that, it also shows art-house films usually related to the theme of shows in its associated exhibition space (www.filmgalerie.at). If the vegetarian offerings, salads, pasta and meats don’t get you up here, then the lively indoor and outdoor bar or the cinematic aspect might.

    Bar Quebra Costas

In the perfect position to sip a cold beer as you watch people puff and pant up the Quebra Costas, this Coimbra classic has a great terrace as well as a recently updated interior with sharp art on the walls. Thursday through Saturday there’s music into the wee hours, from chilled-out electronica to jazz.

    Cineworld Multiplex

This 17-screen cinema replaced many smaller cinemas and shows only commercial releases. The seats are comfy, the concession stand is huge and the selection of pick ‘n’ mix could induce a sugar seizure. It lacks the style of the older-style cinema, but we like it anyway.

  4. C

    Universale

The owners have converted this old cinema, putting a restaurant upstairs and a bar in the middle of the downstairs area, around which gathers a mixed set of locals tending towards the beautiful people. In the background a screen plays classic black and white movie clips.

    Gefärlich

This deeply groovy bar-club-restaurant-lounge-café-hairdresser-clothing store-art space (really) has made a major splash on the Nørrebro nightlife scene. It gets packed on weekends, with the incriminating evidence usually posted on MySpace by midweek.

    Studentenclub Schützengasse

The grunge factor is high at this student club, which may be just what the doctor ordered as an antidote to highbrow burnout. Monday movie nights and salsa nights also provide diversions.

    Kanzlei

What is a school playground by day morphs into an outdoor bar session by night, especially in summer. Kanzlei’s club action happens downstairs, underground.
