Boat Excursions
You can save yourself a lot of money and hassle by taking boats run by the Dalyan Kooperatifi, whose members moor on the river southwest of the main square. It's a fairly easy process, but if you need help, ask for Eddy (or call him on 0541 505 0777).
Boats usually leave the quayside at 10am or 10.30am to cruise to Lake Köyceğiz and the Sultaniye hot springs, the ruins of Kaunos and İztuzu Beach on the Mediterranean. These good-value tours, including lunch, cost TL30 per person.
If you can drum up a team of like-minded folk, you can hire a passenger boat that holds from eight to 12 people. A two‑hour tour just to Kaunos costs TL80 for the boat; if you want to visit the…

Blue Cruises
Countless excursion boats are moored along Neyzen Tevfik Caddesi; a 'blue cruise'on board one of these is a fun day trip. Like the ferry companies, some even access peninsula bays, saving you a sweaty minibus ride (check locally). Karaada (Black Island), with hot-spring waters gushing from a cave, is a popular destination where you can swim and loll in supposedly healthful orange mud.
Book cruises at your hotel, or on the moored excursion boats, ideally a day ahead. Group tours start from €12.

Birdwatching
From March to May and August to October, if the levante (easterly wind) is blowing or there's little wind, the Tarifa area, including the spectacular Mirador del Estrecho lookout point, is great for watching bird migrations across the Strait of Gibraltar. The volunteer-staffed Estación Ornitológica de Tarifa, 5km northwest of town, provides lots of information on the area's birds. Andalucian Guides leads recommended birdwatching day trips in the area from €135 for one to three people.

Bewilderwood
A forest playground for children and adults alike, this place is littered with zip wires, jungle bridges, tree houses and all sorts of old-fashioned outdoor adventure. It's a magical kind of place where children can run, jump, swing and climb to their hearts' content. There are marsh walks, boat trips, mazes, den-building activities, plenty of mud and peals of laughter all over the site. You and your young ones will wish you'd found it sooner.
Bus No 12a from Norwich drops you right at the door.
