Heritage Railway activities in Europe

  1. Dean Forest Railway

This short stretch of rail between Lydney and Parkend is plied by six classic steam engines on select days from March to December, as well as a special treat for children – Thomas the Tank Engine – making the occasional guest appearance. The standard ride is 28 minutes long, but there are lots of special events organised by the railway – from Sunday luncheons in 1st-class carriages to ‘drive you own steam engine’ experiences; book in advance.

  2. Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway

Originally built to carry ore, timber and other industrial goods to the ports at Ulverston and Barrow, these vintage steam trains now puff their way between Haverthwaite, near Ulverston, to Newby Bridge and Lakeside. There are between five and seven trains a day depending on the season, handily timed to correspond with the Windermere cruise boats.
