    Horse-drawn carriages seating four people can be hired from a stand behind SKB Banka. Prices range from around €10 for a trip to Jasna Lake to around €30 for a jaunt to Planica.

    George Plant Minibus Tours operates various tours from June to September. Trips include Mizen Head, the Beara Peninsula and Gougane Barra Forest Park. They only run if there are sufficient numbers.

    Towering over Semmering to the south is the Hirschenkogel (1340m), where a modern Cable Car to Hirschenkogel whisks you to the top. Regional skiing day passes are also available for around €31.

    Potsdam Sanssouci Tour

    The local tourist office runs the 3½-hour Potsdam Sanssouci Tour, which checks off the highlights and guarantees admission to Schloss Sanssouci. Tours are in English and German and leave at 11am from Luisenplatz and at 11.10am from the tourist office at the Hauptbahnhof.

    Ajaccio Vision runs tours of the city's main sights in double decker open-top buses with multilingual commentary, stopping for a break at Pointe de la Parata. Tours depart from opposite the town hall on place Foch.

    From November to mid-January, when the orcas, or killer whales, gather to gorge themselves on the winter herring run, Ford Cruise Narvik does four- to six- hour trips to their feeding grounds in search of the action.

    No bus can get you around the narrow streets and hidden courtyards of the Old Town and Kazimierz like these five-seater golf carts. Expect to pay about 170zł per person for an hour's run-around with taped commentary.

    The mountain rising over the resort is Zwölferhorn (1520m); a Cable Car will whisk you to the top where there are good views and two trails (2 to 2½ hours) leading back to St Gilgen. Skiers ascend in winter.

    A hop-on, hop-off city tour, on an open-top bus that stops all over the city. There's also a second route, the Skyline tour, out to Prior Park ; the same tickets are valid on both routes. See website for route details.

    Run by the same company that organises the Hop On Hop Off tours, Vienna Sightseeing Tours offers a wide variety of half- and full-day tours in English with free hotel pick up. Its website lists all the tours and times.

    Two-hour guided walks depart from Swan fountain just by the Royal Shakespeare Theatre. An alternative walk is run by the Royal Shakespeare Company on Saturday mornings, and leaves outside the Swan Theatre on Waterside.

    The SBA-Norðurleið bus picks up at Húsavík at 10:00 daily in summer, and does a return eight-hour excursion to Jökulsárgljúfur National Park & Dettifoss , stopping at the main sights.

    As well as the very popular night watchman tour, the tourist office also stages guided 90-minute town walks in peak season, but at the time of research these were only being conducted in Danish and German.

    The tourist office leads spooky, thrilling, and educational Cave Tours - this experience is highly recommended. Although tours are supposed to be conducted in Dutch, ask for Kitty, an extremely knowledgeable, English-speaking guide.

    A number of outfits organise diving trips around the island. Try Adria Krk. Popular dive sites include a sunken Greek cargo vessel and a variety of underwater caves, tunnels and coral walls around the island of Plavnik and as far as Cres.

    Guided tours through the Chichester Cathedral operate at 11:15 and 14:30 Monday to Saturday, Easter to October, and the excellent cathedral choir are guaranteed to give you goose bumps during the daily Evensong (17:30 Mon-Sat, 15:30 Sun).
