Course dates vary – consult the website – but they usually run from 10am to 1pm, including visiting a market and preparing a four-course lunch, and cost €50 per person. If you’ve always fancied yourself a bit like Russell Crowe, you can hone your gladiatorial skills at Gruppo Storico Romano. An association of history enthusiasts, it has established Rome’s first gladiator school. Workshops, open to men and women, are in English and last two hours. The cost is between €25 and €75 per person, depending on the size of the group (one to one costs €100).

The third generation in the ice-cream business, David runs classes that last around an hour and culminate in your very own gelateria certificate. Times vary according to demand, so call or drop by to organise; David speaks excellent English. His specialities include the deliciously one-off 'Sorrento moon', with almond and lemons, and veneziana, a lemon, orange and mandarin sorbet; he also makes all the traditional flavours.
