Ok, so I've been in Addis a week and absolutely loving it despite the initial massive culture shock!
I want to get the coach to Dire Dawa on Wednesday morning. My question is, given that the buses leave so early I'll need to be at Meskel Square for about 5am presumably?
I'm staying at Atelfugne in Kera. I could walk from here to Meskel, it's a straight forward route through Mexico but I'll have heavy bags. What is the chance of seeing a taxi that early? If I do manage to find one, what would be a…

I am planning a trip for this winter and Ethiopia is one place I am interested in seeing. (as an aside, the impression I have is that Morocco is not ideal in the winter due to chilly weather and rains...is winter (late December/January) not ideal for Morocco)

Anyway, as far as Ethiopia goes, I have done some preliminary research, and it seems to be quite different in terms of what I can do on my own than other countries I have visited (China, India, Myanmar). I am generally under the…

I have read there is a black market rate in Sudan on $, but is the case in Ethiopia as well. ? and at the land borders or mostly big cities. Any well known places to exchange cash? What currency works best?

What currency is best, and is there is a significant difference between big and small USD$, as in many countries, but one rate for € and £ whether cashing a ten or a fifty?

On big ticket items, are people only looking for western currency, or are costs in local currency making a black…

Hi All,

I'm a solo, female traveler from Denver, CO and I'm planning a trip to Ethiopia in late September/early October. I'd like to set up a south Omo tour to join while in Addis Ababa. Or are there other places I should look to set up my tour from? I've been reading that the minimum time you need to allow for a south Omo tour is 6-8 days. Some say 10 is ideal. But, I just don't have that kind of time. Realistically I'd like to do a 4-5 day tour. Maybe 3?? I'd really like to see the Surma…

Hi,
Does anyone have an idea of how long the processing time is for e-visas? I've tried the site and calling them but to no avail.

Hi experts,

I'll be connecting flights in Addis in a few days, with 7 - 8 hours of layover (morning/daytime). Ideally I'd like to get some work done and would prefer a more laidback atmosphere than the airport terminal. It seems transit visas are available, so I'm considering leaving the airport. Any input on the following questions would be super helpful:

  • Is it quick and easy to obtain the transit visa and leave the aiport, or does it include time consuming procedures and hassle?
  • Are…

I travelled to Ethiopia in June and used this and the TA forum for planning so thought I would repay with a trip report. I only had 8 days so limited myself to the Northern historical circuit. With more time I would do longer in the Simiens (at least a 4 day trek) and Harar. Danakil Depression was also recommended to me.

I flew internationally with Ethiopian Airlines so was able to book discounted internal flight tickets with them in advance. All the flights were good and ran as scheduled…

Hi,
I'm thinking of going to the Danakil Depression in Ethiopia at the end of this year. I've found that ethio travel and tours is the main agency that runs tours there and one of the more affordable companies. I'm reading quite mixed reviews of them. Some reviews say that they were absolutely excellent while others say quite the opposite (ie using old cars, not booking accommodations, not picking up from airport). Has anyone recently had any experiences with this company? or any others in…
