Anyone had any luck getting an Ethiopian tourist visa from the consulates in Cairo or Khartoum?
I'm heading out for a Cairo-Cape Town trip in 10 days, and the Ethiopian Embassy in Canada is giving me a hard time with my visa approval because I'm travelling overland from Sudan (They want bus reservations, which are impossible to get, and visa approval from Sudan and Egypt, which I don't have since I'm getting VOA).
Have heard it's only possible to get one from your home country…

Fyi for fellow travelers......I just returned from Ethiopia and wanted to give a quick status report for Erta Ale. I did the 4 day Danakil tour with ETT. While overall the tour was great, it needs to be clear that as of March, 2017 there is no lava lake at Erta Ale. Volcanic activity in late January caused the lava lake to collapse or drain....not exactly sure. Currently there is a lava flow to the right of the summit where you can see some activity from 200-300 meters. To get to this…
Been to Ethiopia before - last trip 15 years ago.
However, this time I need the help of a guide / Fixer in Ethiopia for a project I am planning.
Anyone have names / contact details.
I will be in Ethiopia from April 25th to May 12th. I'm planning a short trip South (about 7 days) before heading to the North. I wanted to drive to Jinka, Key Afer and Trumi through Shashamane and Awassa. Although the timing is really short, I'm hoping to wake up early and make the most of it, taking in the landscapes and trying to understand as much as I can about the local tribes. I value my freedom and plan to do this independently.
Are there any folks around who are planning to…
In January of this year, I traveled solo around the Omo Valley, with just a local English speaking guide and driver. I truly believe this was the best way to travel, as I had some lovely unexpected moments that I do not think would have happened if I had been with a group. I would not have felt comfortable driving myself or traveling without a local guide.
I really wanted to engage with the locals, but in a sensitive way - I know these folks are used to having people come into their villages…
