I'm off to Ethiopia in June but only for 1.5 months. I don't want to fly if I can help it so am trying to organise a sensible route/itinerary.
Does anyone know anything about the new rail line from Addis to Dire Dawa? There are loads of reports from when it opened in October but no website or details! Seems the original plan was to run cargo to Djibouti via Dire until January when passenger service would start. Any info would be good, whether it is/will be running, how much the fare…
The trip i was planning elsewhere has fallen through so i have had Ethiopia on my radar for a while. i am planning to get straight out of Addis Ababa quickly and go to Harar, then to the Simien mountains, Lalibela, churchs of Tigray, and the Danakil Depression not necessarily that order. how easy or difficult will it be to do this independently? i plan to fly where possible to cut down on travelling time.
Something i need to looking to also is crossing in to Djibouti, is this straight forward?

Have heard it's only possible to get one from your home country…

Fyi for fellow travelers......I just returned from Ethiopia and wanted to give a quick status report for Erta Ale. I did the 4 day Danakil tour with ETT. While overall the tour was great, it needs to be clear that as of March, 2017 there is no lava lake at Erta Ale. Volcanic activity in late January caused the lava lake to collapse or drain....not exactly sure. Currently there is a lava flow to the right of the summit where you can see some activity from 200-300 meters. To get to this…
