KGB Cells Museum information
What do you do when a formerly nationalised building is returned to you with cells in the basement and a fearsome reputation? In this case, the family donated the basement to the Tartu City Museum, which created this sombre and highly worthwhile exhibition. Chilling in parts, the displays give a fascinating rundown on deportations, life in the Gulags, the Estonian resistance movement and what went on in these former KGB headquarters, known as the ‘Grey House’. In 1990 the Cornflower Monument was erected near the building in memory of the victims of Soviet repression; the blue cornflower is Estonia’s national flower.
