I'm planning a trip (beginning in Asmara, Eritrea - yes I have my visa already) and also wanted to head into Addis Ababa from there.

Has anyone made the trip from Eritrea to Ethiopia recently (or reverse)?

Thanks in advance.

Has anyone been able to enter Eritrea from the land border with Sudan? Did you make stops on the way towards Asmara? I understand that one is supposed to have travel permits to pass through, but was this at all enforced on the way from the Sudanese border to Asmara? Thank you for any first hand or other info that you may have.

OK, I can tell you right now that money is going to be your biggest headache. The government of Eritrea abruptly changed the currency at the end of last year (2015) in an effort to crush the black market. At least temporarily, it worked. As of early May 2016, the official exchange rate is 15 nakfa to 1 U.S. dollar and the black market rate is 20 nakfa to 1 U.S. dollar. Before last year, the black market rate was around 60 nakfa for 1 U.S. dollar. For euros, the official exchange rate is 16…

Hey people..I was there on December. As u may know most of the regions are not accessible..Travelling around is expensive after the changes on local currency. In the regions where access is allowed u need to declare the days of your visit in advance. Its important to have a good contact point down there. I would definitely suggest contacting Mehretab who is based in asmara ( mehretabb@gmail.com/29117131058). He is a really nice person with a lot of knowledge on everything u need to know…

Hello,

I'm french and I live in Hong Kong, I would like to visit Eritrea for two weeks in July but there is no Eritrean consulate in Hong Kong and I have to go to Beijing, it's not convenient and expensive.
Do you know another way to get a visa from Hong Kong?

Thank you

I'm an American and really want to visit Eritrea but know the visa process can be very very difficult particularly for Americans (although I did read that one post below where I guy got it in a week! so I'm hoping they're letting up a bit). As such I am thinking about hiring a travel company to help with the visa process and to get me a driver guide etc. I just would like to know if these guys are reliable and trustworthy?? I'd rather use Oasis over Undiscovered Destinations only because doing…

I'm based in Italy and so it is expensive to get my hands on dollars. However, every post I have seen lists prices in dollars. Are euros as widely accepted or does Eritrea run on dollars? Thanks.
