Joquei Clube
One of the country's loveliest racetracks, with a great view of the mountains and Corcovado, the Joquei Clube (Jockey Club) seats 35,000 and lies on the Gávea side of the Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas opposite Praça Santos Dumont. Local race fans are part of the attraction – it's a different slice of Rio life.
Tourists are welcome in the members' area, which has a bar overlooking the track. Races are held on Monday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The big event is the Brazilian Grand Prix (the first Sunday in August).

Woodbine Racetrack
Secretariat's last race was run at Woodbine Racetrack, where the action revolves around thoroughbreds and standardbreds (harness racing). Look out for the statue of Canada's famous racehorse Northern Dancer. The racetrack is northwest of downtown Toronto off Hwy 427, near Hwy 27. Take the subway to Woodbine, then the shuttle bus picking punters up before post time (usually noon or 6:45pm) and returning them 20 minutes after the last race.

Happy Valley Racecourse
An outing at the races is one of the quintessential Hong Kong things to do, especially if you happen to be around during one of the weekly Wednesday evening races here. The punters pack into the stands and trackside, cheering, drinking and eating, and the atmosphere is electric.
The first horse races were held here in 1846. Now meetings are held both here and at the newer and larger (but less atmospheric) Sha Tin Racecourse in the New Territories. Check the website for details on betting and tourist packages.
Racing buffs can also visit the Hong Kong Racing Museum.
