The Sprig & Fern brewery in Richmond supplies an extensive range of beers to S&F pubs springing up around the region. Around 20 brews on tap, from lager through to doppelbock and berry cider. No pokies, no TV, just decent beer, occasional live music and a pleasant outdoor area. Pizzas can be ordered in.

    Pomeroy's Old Brewery Inn

The welcoming Pomeroy's is the city's hoppy hub for fans of NZ's rapidly expanding craft beer scene. A wide range of guest taps showcase brews from around the country, often including seasonal beers and limited releases. Check the website for what's coming up. There's occasional live music, and the attached Victoria's Kitchen does great pub food (mains $20 to $30).

    Malthouse

At last count there were 150 reasons to drink at this, the capital's original craft-beer bar. Savvy staff will recommend brews from an epic list that showcases beers from NZ and around the globe. Enquire about new arrivals, and the aged selection of brews if you're a well-heeled beer geek.

    Brewery

Out in Woolston, it's a fair schlep from the city, but the Brewery is an essential destination for beer-loving travellers. Cassels & Sons craft all their beer using a wood-fired brew kettle, resulting in big, bold beers like their 1PA and Best Bitter. Tasting trays are available for the curious and the indecisive, and the food – including wood-fired pizzas – is top-notch, too.

    Hashigo Zake

The headquarters of the capital's underground beer movement, this brick-walled basement bar pours only quality craft brews to a wide range of hopheads. An oft-changing selection of a dozen beers on tap is reinforced by a United Nations of around 140 beers by the bottle.

    Arrow Brewing Company

Seven different beers and a sunny courtyard make the Arrow Brewing Company an essential stop. We're especially keen on the honey-infused Gentle Annie lager and the hoppy Arrow Pilz pilsner. Occasional seasonal beers create havoc for the indecisive drinker, and good-value meals and bar snacks include quite possibly the South Island's best lamb burger.

    Atlas Beer Cafe

Perched at the end of Steamer Wharf this pint-sized bar speclalises in beers from Dunedin's Emerson's Brewery and regular guest beers from further afield. A concise but tasty food menu includes good-value sandwiches and wraps for lunch (around $10), and shared plates and tapas ($10 to $15) for dinner. If you're a craft beer fan, also head to Dux de Lux.

    Minibar

Beer, beer and more beer. More than 100 local and international beers are poured in this compact space. A cool name for a cool bar, oozing with style.

    Free House

Come rejoice at this church of ales. Tastefully converted from its original, more reverent purpose, it’s now home to an excellent, oft-changing selection of NZ craft beers. You can imbibe inside or out. Hallelujah.
