Lonely Planet review for Fort Paull

Around 6 miles east of the centre, along the A1033, Fort Paull is a grand, lavishly restored fort. The 1860s structure, with its underground labyrinths, is interesting, while stilted waxworks and warlike stuff document the fort's history from the AD 910 Viking landing onwards.

Fort Paull No More - now an awful experience

    LilliaShredniVashtar does not recommend this,

We visited this attraction over the easter period and could not believe our eyes. Not only had it gone way up in price (twice that as listed here on lonelyplanet) but the place had disintegrated to such a degree we couldn’t wait to get out. Everything has become so dirty and is completely uncared for, like a bombsite. I felt really grubby after spending just half an hour back in the place having been unable to access some of the underground places because of the disgusting and dangerous state of the stairways and paths. I actually left feeling ill on breathing in the mouldy atmosphere. I still cant believe that these people are actually charging visitors to go round the hellhole of a place it has degenerated to compared to how very different it was when launched over ten years ago. Back then it was clean, friendly, packed with spectacle and fascination, having been carefully created (and I think run) by a professional family who were said to be linked with Tussauds and the London Palladium Cellars, different to this new lot. It matched the description then of being lavishly restored, but no longer. Its as though it has long closed and been abandoned, but somehow kept doors open by other people.
